5 Learning Styles
Auditory: Someone who is an auditory learner learns best when the materials are presented in a
video, audiobook, or lecture. These learners do better with hearing the material than reading the
material. Knowing one of your ELL students is an auditory learner will help you best adjust them
to a new environment because as an educator since this would allow you to know that playing
videos, movie clips, reading books out loud, and lecturing is the best way for that child to
understand what is being presented to them. For example, if you have auditory learners in your
classroom, instead of providing a reading on a topic, you can show a video or you can present the
information orally.
Applied: Someone who has an applied learning style is someone who learns through practical,
real world examples. They learn best when practical real-life examples are used. For example, if
you are teaching about geometry, using real life examples like construction and building to
explain it works best for students with this learning style. Knowing one of your ELL students has
this learning style would help you best adjust them to a new school because it would allow you
to know to use real life examples to explain complex ideas. Additionally, as an educator you can
have real people who work in certain fields or work with certain topics to come in and talk to
your students about how they use math/science/etc. In their everyday life. Also, talking about
math/science/etc. In relation to things the students do everyday like cooking, baking, walking to
school, etc.
Spatial: Students with a spatial learning style are very good at visualizing how things work. They
may also be good at drawing things out or assembling things. So for example, these students
would be able to visualize the things you explain orally. So if you were explaining that an
isosceles triangle has two sides that are the same length, the students would be able to picture
what the triangle looks like. Knowing one of your ELL students has this learning style would
help you adjust them to a new school because it would allow you to know how your students'
thinking works. Knowing that your student can visualize the things you are talking about also
means that they most likely are good at drawing out what they visualize. In the case of an ELL
student they might be able to better draw out a topic than explain it using words. Also, these
students might be good at making a model to show their understanding instead of explaining or
writing it out.
Social: Students with a social learning style work best with groups and/or partners of classmates.
Also, they would do well when working with an instructor. These students enjoy interactions and
working with the class as a whole. Knowing your ELL student has a social learning style is
helpful to help them adjust to a new school so you as an educator can plan for more partner work
or for you to work one on one with that student more. It could also allow you to plan for more
whole class discussion time so they have more interactions and can learn from one another more.
Additionally, you can form small groups that the students can work on a subject with for a little
bit everyday.
Creative: Learners with a creative learning style work best when given the opportunity to use
their imagination and are given the chance to experiment. Knowing your ELL student is a
creative learner is helpful for an ELL student adjusting to a new school since it can allow you as
an educator to plan more experiments into your science curriculum and it can help you know to
incorporate more projects that students can get creative with. Also, it can help you know how
your student may communicate. If they are a creative learner they might communicate better
through drawings, crafts, etc. In regards to your ELL learners it may be easier for these learners
