EXPECTATIONS

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 9. All the

activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand:
Identifying Advance Organizers in a Given Text.

Specifically, you will learn the following:

1. Define advance organizers.
2. Identify the two types of advance organizers.
3. Use advance organizers in a given text.

PRETEST

Directions: Read the sentences very carefully. Then, write A if the ideas in
the paragraph can be organized using a sequence chart, and B if they can be
organized through a fishbone diagram. Write the answer on the space
provided before each number.

_____1. Using an organizer is very important in life. First, it makes

everything in order. Second, you can plan. Third, it makes
information easy to understand.

_____2. Technology changes people‟s way of life. This is because everything

that they do, they rely on technology. They use different appliances
in doing household chores. They buy gadgets such as cellphones
and tablets to stay connected to people anytime and anywhere.

_____3. A long time ago, going to another country seems difficult. However,
social media such as Facebook and Instagram make the
impossible possible. Now, people seem to travel a lot in any
country they love.
_____4. There are many ways on how you can be of help to other people even
if you do not have money. You can donate to charity your used
clothes, shoes, and bags. Also, time and presence are something
you can give to people especially to your friends who might need
someone to talk to. Lastly, your effort and willingness to help
without something in return matters a lot.

_____5. The people in our community do not segregate their garbage. Some
just throw their plastic cups and straws on the street, while others
throw directly their plastic waste on the drainage. Thus, every time
it rains, we experience a flood.

RECAP

We learned that making connections in texts we read is an effective

comprehension skill. We say that connection is a link a reader makes
between the text that he is reading and the other text that he has read
before.
Relating ideas and insights between the present text and a previously
read text activates the reader‟s background knowledge and prior experiences
which leads to a worthwhile reading experience.

LESSON

Community quarantine gives us time to organize our things at home.

We put our things in a place that gives us easy access. Now that you stay at
home because of the community quarantine, you have more time to help
your parents in cleaning and organizing things in your house.
We organize things according to their category, usefulness, and
relationship to things we do every day. It‟s the same thing when we read
selections or information. We use organizers or illustrations to connect one
idea to the other idea for us to understand what we have read.

An advance organizer is a graphic organizer which is a visual display

that organizes ideas and shows the relationships between concepts or
information that guides us to think and understand what we read. Today,
let us talk about the types of graphic organizer appropriate to use in
selections and passages that we read for better comprehension. These are
the sequence charts and fishbone diagrams.

A sequence chart is used to show a series of steps or events arranged

in chronological order. Let‟s take a look and read this paragraph as an
example:

The National Risk Reduction Management Council in Action

In preparation for the BIG ONE in the Philippines, first, the government agency for
disaster or the National Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) has been
working so hard to come with a harmonized contingency plan to be implemented
nationwide. Second, they heightened their earthquake risk assessment tools to identify high
risk and vulnerable areas. Then, information, education, and communication campaigns
have been disseminated to local governments through its interagency task force.
Meanwhile, the local government is responsible for instructing every barangay to bring
awareness and preparedness to its households including the school communities. Lastly, a
quarterly nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill has been conducted throughout the
nation following the duck, cover, and hold protocol during an earthquake.

Now, let‟s analyze the example using the sequence chart. Let‟s identify
the sequence of events on the chart based on the paragraph. Remember that
when writing the information, you can paraphrase or use your own words.
Let‟s start. Our title as indicated in the passage is „The National Risk
Reduction Management Council in Action‟. After the title, our beginning
information has been suggested by the signal word, „first‟, so, our first event
is “First, National Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) come with a
harmonized contingency plan.’.

Then, the next event is ‘Second, they heightened their earthquake risk
assessment tools.’. It is followed by “Then, campaigns have been
disseminated to local governments.’. The fourth one is „Meanwhile, the local
government instructs every barangay to inform its constituents.’. Then the
fifth sentence and the last in series is ‘Lastly, a quarterly nationwide
simultaneous earthquake drill is conducted.’.

Now, we have finished filling in the chart. As you have observed, every
beginning word of the sentence starts with a signal word such as first,
second, then, meanwhile, and lastly. These signal words tell us where we are
going to put the sentences whether in the beginning, middle, or end part of
the paragraph. Aside from signal words, we can also use connectors to
connect one idea to the other such as next, afterward, subsequently, in
addition to, therefore, or finally, etc.
Let‟s try these items as a practice exercise. Clap your hands once if
the sentences should be found in the beginning part of the chart. Then,
stomp your feet if the sentence should be in the middle and shake your hips
if it should be in the end part.

Here is the first one:

Then, the PAGASA will give forecasts and warnings to the people of the
possible disaster and problems the typhoon might cause to the affected areas.
They also advise the people if they need to evacuate the place.

Where should it be on the chart? These sentences should be placed in

the middle of the chart. We have the help of the signal word, „then‟, which
suggests that these sentences should be in the middle.

How about in these sentences?

The typhoon is formed in the Pacific Ocean when the temperature from
the ocean’s surface along with the air temperature is high. The Philippines is
prone to typhoons because of its location.

These sentences should be at the beginning of the chart. Though there

is no signal word, the message is already implied. Let‟s see this one.

Therefore, people should stay alert and vigilant with their surroundings.
They should listen and follow the announcements, warnings, and advice of
the authorities for their safety.
Where should it be? These sentences should be in the end part of the
chart. The signal word „therefore‟ gives us the hint that it‟s the end of the
paragraph.

The typhoon is formed Then, the PAGASA Therefore, the people

in the Pacific Ocean will give forecast and should stay alert and
when temperature from warnings to the people vigilant with their
the ocean’s surface of the possible disaster surroundings. They
along with the air and problems the should listen and follow
temperature is high. typhoon might cause to the announcements,
The Philippines is the affected areas. They warnings and advice of
prone to typhoons also give advice to the the authorities for their
because of its location. people if they need to safety.
evacuate the place.

Now, let‟s talk about another type of organizer. It is called the fishbone
diagram.

The fishbone diagram is used in a cause-and-effect relationship. A

cause-and-effect relationship is a relationship between events or things,
where one is the result of the other.
In the fishbone diagram, the head is the effect or the outcome while
the bones are the causes.

Fishbone Diagram

Causes

Effect

Let us dicuss it further through this sample paragraph:

Human’s love of eating exotic food has led to the pandemic that changes people’s
lives. This pandemic is the coronavirus disease 19 better known as COVID19. It can be
transmitted from person to person by touch. However, even if you did not touch someone,
sneezing also causes the acquisition of the disease.
Now, let‟s find out the causes and effects in this short passage using
the fishbone diagram. To identify the causes and effects, first, you have to
ask the question, „What happened?’.

The answer to this question is the effect which we are going to put in
the head part of the fish. So, what happened? There is a pandemic known as
COVID19. This time, let‟s move on to the cause or causes of the COVID19.
Let‟s ask another question that will lead us to the causes – „Why did this
happen?’. There are three reasons this pandemic happens according to the
paragraph. Let‟s put each reason to each bone, so we have: (1) eating exotic
food, (2) touching a person, (3) sneezing to someone.

In some instances, connecting words can sometimes help us to see

the cause of something and its effects. These cause connectors are because,
since, as a result of, for this reason; while this led to, so that, thus, in order to,
and therefore are used to indicate the effects.

Let‟s do these together. Here is another fishbone diagram in which we

have to fill in after we have read the paragraph. Let‟s begin.

The lockdown in our country brings many challenges in the Filipino people. Many
of us had lost their jobs and others had to endure the ‘no work no pay’ policy. Small or big-
time businesses had to close except for the essential ones. Now, the Philippines is facing a
big problem and has to save its economy. Many citizens complained of hunger despite the
government’s effort in providing food and financial subsidy. So, the government through
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque had announced on national television that Metro
Manila will be put under Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine or MECQ.

Now, let‟s organize the causes and effects using the fishbone diagram.
So, let me ask, „What happened?‟. The answer to that question to know the
effect is, ‘There is Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine‟ which should
be put in the head. Next, let me ask again to know the causes, „Why did this
happen?‟. The causes for the MECQ which should be put in each bone are to
save the economy, ease people’s hunger, and return to their jobs.

Again, the effect is, there is a Modified Enhanced Community

Quarantine. What are the causes of the Modified Enhanced Community
Quarantine? It happens because they want to save the economy, ease
people‟s hunger, and return to their jobs.

That‟s how you organize information using graphic organizers.

he doesn‟t have physical defects.

5. Subsequently, man needs to keep his body healthy to enjoy the

gift of life and to live life to the fullest as they say.

Sequence Chart

(B) Read the passage carefully. Then, write the causes and effects
of the fishbone diagram.

Biking is one of the best physical exercises for our bodies. It has many health
benefits to make our bodies physically fit and strong. However, this day biking is
not only done for mere exercise but it is already a mode of transportation to some
especially the working people. This is because the jeepneys, which are the
common and easy transportation of the people going to their workplace are not yet
allowed to operate. Only a few buses were given the permit to go back on the road
but with very limited pickup and drop off points. Also, back riding is not allowed
in motorcycles so people must have to find another means to be in their workplace
on time. Besides, biking is better than walking.
