ABSTRACT
PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang is one of the industries that utilize ammonia to produce urea and NPK
fertilizers. To be able to produce ammonia, synthesis gas is needed. Processing natural gas into synthesis gas
using a Primary Reformer is never free from a problem. Among these problems, catalyst deactivation is a
problem that is sure to occur. The deactivation process, in some cases, can be worsened by the presence of
carbon deposits in the catalyst. This can cause a decrease in the ability of the catalyst to convert natural gas,
which contains a lot of methane, into synthesis gas. As a result, methane slip occurs. This study aims to review
the effect of carbon deposit on methane slip and how to optimize it. The review was carried out using the micro-
kinetic analysis method, which first studied the reaction mechanism on the catalyst surface, then evaluated the
general reaction kinetics and the reaction of carbon deposits. Based on this, it is concluded that carbon deposit
worsens the catalyst deactivation process with many active sites of the catalyst being covered by carbon.
However, this condition can still be anticipated by adjusting and maintaining operating conditions at a
temperature of 777ºC and a pressure between 27 – 30,5 kg/cm2.
