1.1. Introduction
It is possibile to create hard disks using the software Ghost by Symantec directly on a standard PC
without using the NC.
Using this software we already created a set of image files that already contain:
- Operatine system
- Xnc version
- Total data
- plc
The data and plc installed are the ones normally used for each release. In case it is necessary to use
different files it is possible to install them using the floppy drive, the zip drive or an hard disk set as
a slave, once the hard disk has been mounted into the control.
Following is a list of the files container in the different CD roms:

Notes:
- The image files container in the CD1, 2, 3, 4 have been created for XNC controls. In case you
need to set up a XNC Compact you have to follow the instructions container in the appendix B
once the hard disk is connected to the control.
- The CD 4 contains the operatine system for the new type of mother boards POS566 that in some
cases are going to replace the old models no longer available.
- The CD 5 contains all the versions, data e plc used for the XNC controls. It can be used a a slave
hard disk in case you have to upgrade a release and the necessary files are too big to be container n
a floppy disk or in case you do not have a zip drive.

1.2. How to copy an image file onto an hard disk

Hard disk Primario del PC

Primary Hard disk of PC

Hard disk per XNC

Su Mother board
Secondary Hard disk
On Motherboard
for XNC

It is possibile to do this operation in any PC by connecting the new disk as a slave on the primari IDE
(remember to set up the jumpers to set it as slave)
For this operation it is necessari a flat cable as the one shown in the picture above.

- The first IDE channel to the first plug

- The master HD to the middle plug
- The slave HD to the last plug

Copy from the CD to the master hard disk the image file you need to install.
Insert the bootable floppy disk created with the file ghost_2003.exe (see instructions in appendix A) and
switch on the PC.
In order to start the process select:
Local --> Disk --> From Image --> select the master hard disk and choose the image file to be copied.
When finished, switch off the PC, disconnect the hard disk and se the jumpers as master.
Install the new hard disk in the control. At the first start up you will only get a black screen with a grey bar
at the bottom, since you still have to link to the correct machine. At this point proceed with the load the
machine data backup.
Switch off and on. Install the PLC.

About motherboard POS566: if you are going to make a HD for motherboard POS566, you need tomake
two more steps:
1 - upg-1-k310.tgz  ALLWAYS INSTALL THIS FILE BEFORE PLC AND THIS MUST BE DONE
EVERY TIME YOU INSTALL THE PLC.
2- Ch’ange the video resolution.
(you should read istruction POS Install_sw_hard_disk.doc)

1.3. How to install files or upgrades using a slave hard disk

In case you need to install some files or an upgrade but you do not have a zip drive, it is possibile to use an
hard disk connected as slave.
First of all you have to create an hard disk using the file master_versione.GHO, which contains all the
versione, data and PLC.
You then have to connect the hard disk set as slave (using the same flat cable used before)

When booting up you have to enter into an X-terminal nd type:

su
mount /dev/hd1b /mnt
it is now possibile to install the files from INSTALL XNC --> install from file and insert the path: /mnt/.......

1.5. APPENDIX B

Necessary settings to use the hard disk on a XNC Compact

These files have been created using a standard XNC. In case you have to configure an hard disk for a XNC
Compact you need to perform some other operations in order to set up the correct screen configuration.
These operations depends from motherboard type too.
