Lesson Idea Name: Who was Jackie Robinson?

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd Grade

Content Standard Addressed: SS2H1c. Describe the life and contributions of Jackie Robinson

learning in a variety of ways.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea? Using Padlet, my students will be able to
describe the life and contributions of Jackie Robinson

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

To promote student learning to a higher level of Bloom’s Critical Thinking, is that students will be able to
analyze their results from the Booklet assessment and from there, can know what areas of the topic they
can improve on.
How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that
apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by
teacher direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems

and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation: In this lesson, students will learn about the life and contributions of
Jackie Robinson. To begin the lesson, the teacher will engage the students by asking them if they know
any famous baseball players. Following, the students will be instructed to grab a device (iPad or
tablet) and follow the Padlet link. Then, the teacher will continue this engagement by asking which
baseball player to hit 137 homeruns in his career and students will respond to the question
anonymously (as seen on the Padlet). Next, the teacher will introduce the BrainPOP jr. video about
Jackie Robinson and the class will watch it together (6 minutes). To follow, students will then answer
the following question via audio response on the Padlet (when a time was you had to show courage
and patience like Jackie Robinson), allowing children to engage and connect with the content. After
their audio responses are all recorded, they will all be assessed on their knowledge of Jackie Robinson
through Booklet. After the game, students will have access to see what questions they missed and
answered correctly, allowing them to see what they can improve on. To conclude the lesson, the
teacher will summarize Jackie Robinson's life and his contributions (for being a great athlete and
fighting for civil rights) and then ask students to work in their groups and tell the teacher one fact
about his life or a contribution he made.

Managing student learning: In this lesson, students will become passive to active learners through Padlet
and Booklet, as they will have set time limits and towards the end, metacognition checks. As students are
asked their first question on Padlet, they will be given five minutes able to respond to the question via audio.
Following this, the students will go the Booklet link in the Padlet page, vote on the game, and be given a
certain amount of time (set time limits) to answer each question (forcing them to actively think about what
they have just learned). In addition to set time limits, there will be metacognition checks, as students will work
together and reflect on their learning by telling their teacher one fact or contribution of Jackie Robinson.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Based of the learning activities planned for the activities, the
lesson will support the UDL framework. To specify, students will be engaged, as their interests (sports)
are incorporated into the lesson and are constantly interacting with the tool. The representation of the
information will be displayed in a way that can support all students, such as a video with subtitles in
different languages. Students can demonstrate their knowledge in many ways such as, using different
methods to respond (audio, videos, images, drawings, etc.), verbally communicating to their teacher,
and anonymously answering/responding.
Reflective Practice: I believe that Padlet will greatly help students build understanding in a way

they could not with traditional tools. This is because Padlet offers unique collaboration between the
teachers and students, such as collaborating in and outside of the classroom. For this lesson, I look
forward to implementing the Booklet assessment game because it is incredibly rewarding to see
kids to enjoy learning and gain more knowledge.
