I. TITLE: VOCAL PRAYERS

II. INTRODUCTION:
“The Lord leads all persons by paths and in ways pleasing to Him, and each believer responds according to
his heart’s resolve and the personal expressions of his prayer. However, Christian Tradition has retained three
expressions of prayer: vocal, meditative, and contemplative.” (CCC 2699)
This instructional module will focus on Vocal Prayers and aims to awaken in you the reality that vocal prayer
is an essential element of Christian life. “We are a body and spirit, and we need to translate our feelings
externally. We must pray with our whole being to give power possible to our supplication.” (CCC 2702)
For a better appreciation of each of the prayers, the module includes a brief explanation of the contents and
meaning of each prayer.

III. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the module, I am able to:

1. Define Vocal Prayer
2. Recite prayerfully the different basic vocal prayers.
3. Explain the importance of making the sign of the cross to begin and end a prayer.
4. Explain why the Lord’s Prayer is called the Perfect Prayer.
5. Identify each basic vocal prayer taken in class and explain its content and meaning.

IV. CONCEPT/DISCUSSION
What is Vocal Prayer?
A prayer with words expressing what is in the heart and offered to God as praise, petition, complaint and
thanks. (Youcat-Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church 501)

The prayer most accessible to groups because it is external and so thoroughly human. (CCC 2704)

Basic Vocal Prayers

A. SIGN OF THE CROSS

 It is in itself a very short prayer
 An appeal to God to make our prayers worthwhile
 Professes two truths:
1. The deepest mysteries of the Christian faith which is the Holy Trinity- the Father, Son and Holy
Spirit. (When we say “In the name of,” we profess that we believe that there is one God. We don’t
say “In the names of” stating it in singular and not plural. When we say, the Father, and the Son, and
the Holy Spirit,” we state that we believe that in one God there are three Divine Persons.

2. The saving work of Christ on the Cross.

(This is shown as we trace the cross from our forehead to our abdomen and from shoulder to
shoulder.)
 Short prayer of words and action which is not just a statement of our belief, but a vow to defend that
belief, even if it means taking our own cross to follow Jesus, our Lord and savior.

B. OUR FATHER / THE LORD’S PRAYER
 Called the perfect prayer because Jesus taught it and Jesus certainly knew how to pray
Our Father in heaven; holy be your name. Your kingdom come; Your will be done on earth as it is in
heaven.
(Praying this is a pledge to make God known to all men, so that all may experience His goodness and love)
 Contains the “YOU “ petitions
1. Holy be your name: A prayer of Praise- honors and praises God’s name
2. Your kingdom come A prayer that God’s kingdom may come to all
3. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven mankind and that God’s will be done, so that
goodness may be seen and experienced by all.
Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sinned against us. Do not
bring us to the test, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

There are four Prayers of Petition, also known as “We Petitions”

1. Give us this day our daily bread.
Daily bread includes the material need of man to lead a decent and worthy human life. This petition
presumes that man will use his talents and work for a living. Yet the fruit of our work comes from God; He
blesses our effort.
2. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
This is a request for forgiveness. This petition includes a condition: the person, too, must forgive his
fellowmen as God forgives him.
3. Do not lead us to temptation.
To be kept safe in God’s love
4. Deliver us from evil.
To kept us away from anything that can separate us from God. This implies a pledge that man will not bring
himself in situations that can endanger his friendship with God.

 The Apostles and the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creeds are the two principal Catholic Christian Creeds
(CFC 223).
 They are articulated summary of the essential elements of the Christian faith. (CCC 186)
 They are the greatest Scriptural teachings presenting the one Christian faith in its entirety. (CCC 186)
 They contain the truths that Christians must believe in particularly and distinctly called articles. (CCC
191)
 The articles are 12 symbolizing the fullness of the apostolic Christian faith by the number of the
apostles.
Article 1: “I believe in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth”
Article 2: “and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord”
Article 3: “He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and was born of the Virgin Mary”
Article 4: “Jesus Christ suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried”
Article 5: “He descended into hell, on the third day He rose again”
Article 6: “He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father”
Article 7: “From thence He will come again to judge the living and the dead”
Article 8: “I believe in the Holy Spirit”
Article 9: “I believe in the Holy Catholic Church”
Article 10: “I believe in the forgiveness of sins”
Article 11: “I believe in the resurrection of the body”
Article 12: “I believe in life everlasting”

 The Apostles’ Creed is so called because it is rightly considered to be a beautiful summary of the
apostles’ faith. (CCC194)
 Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, on the other hand, was accepted and promoted by the First Council of
Constantinople in 381. It “confirmed the faith of Nicea,” the first Ecumenical Council held in 325 (CFC
223; cf. CCC 185,194-96)
 When we proclaim that we believe, we are in effect professing our unwavering loyalty to God and the
Church. Every time we recite the Creed in the Mass, we renew our pledge to live according to what we
profess.

D. HAIL MARY
 The first part, “Hail Mary, full of grace the Lord is with you: Blessed are you among women ,and
blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.” were the words of the Archangel Gabriel and St. Elizabeth
which highlight the importance of Mary in our salvation history.
 The second part, “Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
Amen! is a prayer added by the Church, an appeal that Mary, our Mother, will pray for us always.

E. GLORY BE
“Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen!”
 Best known prayer to the Blessed Trinity
 Called Doxology Prayer
 A prayer of Adoration by which we declare our faith in the Holy Trinity

F. HAIL HOLY QUEEN

Hail, Holy Queen, Mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Mother of Mercy! Turn then, most gracious advocate,
Hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope! Thine eyes of mercy towards us;
To thee we cry, And after this our exile,
Poor banished children of Eve; Show unto us
To thee do we send up our sighs, The blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet, Virgin Mary.

  Originally known by its Latin name, Salve Regina
 Recited at the end of the rosary and also used in night prayers
 In this prayer, we pay homage (respect or honor) to the Blessed Virgin Mary, our “Mother of Mercy,” and
humbly ask for her assistance (Many religious including quite a few saints, have considered her help to be
essential for our salvation.)

G. FATIMA PRAYER
O my Jesus, Forgive us our sins, Save us from the fires of hell,
Lead all souls to Heaven, Especially those who have
Most need of Your mercy. Amen.
This prayer is said to be one of the five different prayers revealed by Our Lady of Fatima during her
apparition to the shepherd children of Fatima, Portugal (Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia) on July 13, 1917.
Catholic tradition states that the Fatima children were asked to recite this prayer at the end of each decade of
the rosary, thus the Fatima prayer is known as the Decade Prayer. It was approved for public use in 1930, and
has since become a common (though optional) part of the rosary.

H. MEMORARE
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, That never was it known That anyone who fled to your
protection, Implored your help, Or sought your intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; To you do I come,
Before you I stand, Sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, Despise not my petitions, but
In your clemency hear And answer me. Amen.
 This is a Roman Catholic prayer seeking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for our salvation and
other requests we ask God.
 Memorare is from the Latin which means, “Remember”

I. ANGELUS
Leader: The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary,
Response: And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary…
Leader: Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
Response: Be it done unto me according to Thy word.
Hail Mary…
Leader: And the word was made flesh,
Response: And dwelt amongst us.
Hail Mary…
Leader: Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
Response: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ
Leader: Let us pray…
All: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord,
Thy grace into our hearts; That we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son
Was made known by the message of an angel, May, by His passion and cross,
Be brought to the glory of His Resurrection; Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
 The Angelus is a prayer to sanctify the day.
 It is a recalling how salvation came and still comes to man.
 It is a prayerful remembrance of the Incarnation.
*Incarnation- The fact that the Son of God assumed a human nature and became man in order to accomplish
our salvation in that same human nature. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, is
both true God and true man, not part of God and part of man.

J. GRACE BEFORE MEALS and GRACE AFTER MEALS

Bless us O Lord, and these thy gifts which we are about to receive from Your goodness through Christ our
Lord, Amen!
We give You thanks almighty God, for all your gifts, through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns, now
and forever, Amen!
 Thanking God for His blessings especially the food we eat to nourish our physical body to serve people well.
K. ACT OF CONTRITION
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee,
And I detest all my sins, Because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of hell;
But most of all because I offend Thee, my God, Who are all-good and deserving of all my love.
 I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, To confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life.
Amen.

 This prayer expresses sorrow of the soul and detestation (extreme hatred or dislike) for the sins committed,
together with the resolution not to sin again.
