Exercise No.1. Gyro Error by ABC

While in position Lat. 16o 30.5’ N Long 116o 45.5’E at 0830H LT on 10-May.2022 the OOW observed the bearing of
the sun at 061o pgc . The vessel, MV AIMS is bound to Singapore on a heading of 225 o pgc (226o psc) and speed 14
knots. The variation of the locality at the time of observation is 2 o W.
Use the Almanac (2022) to calculate by ABC method the vessel True Course and Deviation.
Show your computation and fill up the below Gyro Error Log Book.
Deadline for submission is 1000H/ 13-May 2022 (in group Teams)

NB: Cheating is strictly prohibited.

COMPUTATION/SOLUTION:
SOLVE FOR GMT
LT = 08 30 00
UTC = - 8 00 00
GMT = 00 30 00 (MAY 10, 2022)

SOLVE FOR TRUE GHA

GHA = 180◦53.3 ‘
INC/CORR = + 7°30.0’
T/GHA = 188° 23.3’

SOLVE FOR LHA

GHA = 188° 23.3’
LONG = 116o 45.5’E +
LHA = 305° 08’ 48’’ OR 305° 8.8’

SOLVE FOR P
LHA < 180 = AS IT IS
LHA > 180 = -360

360 - 305° 8.8’= 54° 51.2’

LHA (P) = 54° 51.2’

SOLVE FOR TRUE DECLINATION

(d = 0.7 -0.4)
TRUE DECLINATION = DECLINATION + CORRECTION VALUE
TRUE DECLINATION = N17° 33.7’ + 0.4 = 17° 34.1’
T/DECLINATION = N 17° 34.1’

Lat. 16o 30.5’ NS

Long 116o 45.5’E

USING ABC METHOD

SOLVE FOR A.
A = TAN LAT / TAN P
A = TAN 16o 30.5’ N / TAN 54° 51.2’
A = 0.21 S
In naming for A, A is opposite to the name of latitude except when LHA, lies between 090 deg to 270 deg

SOLVE FOR B
B =TAN T/DECLINATION / SIN P
B = Tan N 17° 34.1’/ Sin 54° 51.2’
B = 0.39 N
In naming for B, the name of B is always the same with name of Declination

SOLVE FOR C
If A and B, have the same name use ADITTION, if not use SUBTRACTION and copy the sign of larger number
C = A -/+ B
C = 0.21 S - 0.39 N
C = 0.18 N

Solve for Azimuth

Tan Az = 1/ (C(cos lat))
Tan Az = 1 / (0.18 N (cos 16° 30.5’))
Tan Az = 5.794
Az = N 80.21° E

In naming azimuth, for north or south = copy the name of declination

For east or west, (LHA < 180 = W then if LHA > 180 = E)

SOLVE FOR TRUE BEARING

TB = ZN
TB = 80.21°
TB = 80.21° T

SOLVE FOR GYRO ERROR

TRUE BEARING = 80.21°T
GYRO BEARING (SUN) = 061o
GYRO ERROR = 19.21° E

In naming the error, gyro bearing best error west, gyro bearing least error east.

SOLVE FOR TRUE COURSE

GYRO COMPASS = 225o
GE = + 19.21° E
TRUE COURSE = 244.21 o

SOLVE FOR DEVIATION

Deviation = Gyro Error + Variation
Deviation= 19.21° E + 2 W
Deviation = 21.21 E
To check:
T= 244.21o
V= 2W
M= 246.21 o
D= 21.21 E
C= 225 o

SOLVE FOR STANDARD COURSE

FROM THE MAGNETIC COURSE WE GOT EARLIER
STANDARD COURSE = MAGNETIC COURSE
STANDARD COURSE = 246.21 o

SOLVE FOR MAGNETIC ERROR

ME = True Course –STD Course
ME = 244.21 o - 246.21 o
ME = 2 W
COMPASS BEST ERROR WEST*
