Propeller shaft

removal Transmission flange

1. Propeller shaft removal


1) Draw alignment marks on each flange yoke, flange,
and parking brake drum.
Caution:
・ Because the propeller shaft is adjusted to have
precise balance, always place alignment
marks on each of the joints before removing or
disassembling.

2) Remove the propeller shaft from vehicle.


Note:
・ Remove in order starting from the rear of the
vehicle and moving forward.

7) Remove the seal from the spline yoke.

2) Remove the snap ring from the flange yoke, spline


yoke, and tube.
3) Lightly tap the flange yoke, spline yoke, and tube
yoke shoulders with a copper hammer, etc., and
remove the needle roller bearing from the flange
yoke, spline yoke, and tube.

4) Remove the flange yoke from the spline yoke and


tube.
5) Remove the spider from the spline yoke and tube.
6) Remove the grease fitting from the needle roller
bearing and spline yoke.
Caution:
・ Pay attention to the installation direction of the
grease fitting when assembling.

4) Inspect the propeller shaft for the following.

・Deformation or cracking of the needle roller

Caution:

2. Spider measurement
1) Measure the outer diameter of the spider journal
section using a micrometer.
Standard value Limit

3) Inspect the spline yoke for the following.

0.1 mm { 0.0039 in } 0.3 mm { 0.0118 in }


Caution:
・ In order to prevent deformation, clamp the
spline yoke using a cloth, soft wooden blocks,
etc. Do not directly tighten in a vise.

3. Propeller shaft measurement


1) Measure the runout of the propeller shaft.
Note:
・ Measure at the center part of the tube.
Caution:

・ If the runout exceeds the standard value,

2) Fasten the spline yoke to the vise.


3) Insert the propeller shaft into the spline yoke.
4) With the dial gauge in contact with the spline
section, gently move the propeller shaft and
measure the play in the rotational direction.

Note:
・ If the needle roller bearing is difficult to insert,
align the angles of the spline yoke, tube, and
needle roller bearing before press-fitting again.
The needle roller bearing will be difficult to press-fit if
the angles of the spline yoke, tube, and needle roller
bearing are not aligned.
14) Install the snap ring to the spline yoke and tube.
Caution:
・ Do not reuse the snap ring.

Caution:
・ Always install according to the alignment
marks that were made during removal.
・ Always install the propeller shaft body and
spline yoke so that they face the same
direction.

2. Rear propeller shaft installation


1) Install the propeller shaft to vehicle.
Note:
・ Install according to the alignment marks
applied during disassembly.
・ Install in order starting from the front of the
vehicle and moving rearward.

Front hub

4) Raise the vehicle.

・ Jack up the vehicle until the tire is completely
off the ground.
4. Front hub removal
5) Support the vehicle using a chassis stand as

Caution:
・ The minor scratches on the bearing contact
surface should be repaired using an oil stone
or fine sandpaper.
7) Inspect the wheel pin for breakage.
Caution:
・ If the wheel pin is broken, replace all wheel
pins and wheel nuts of that axle.
2. Measurement of the disc wheel and front hub
installation surfaces
1) For the disc wheel and front hub installation
surfaces, measure the significant stepped wear
associated with long periods of use.
Note:
・ Clean and remove rust, dirt, coating, etc., on Dimensions

3. Front hub inner diameter measurement
1) Measure the inner diameter of the front hub.

between the outer bearing inner race and the front hub
and between the inner bearing inner race and the front
hub.

Caution:
・ Always tighten while rotating the front hub as
failure to do so may result in bearing damage.
・ Slowly tighten the hub nut, and never tighten
with an air tool.
7) Loosen the hub nut and check that the front hub
rotates smoothly.
Caution:
・ Make sure to fully loosen the hub nut.
・ If loosening is insufficient, a correct check will
not be possible.
・ If the front hub does not rotate smoothly, pull 10) After adjusting the preload, turn the front hub to the

3. Brake caliper installation
1) Referring to the diagram, apply NIGLUBE RX-2
rubber grease or equivalent to the following parts.
・ Inside of the boot
・ Slide pin boot mounting groove and entire
circumference of the sliding section
・ Entire circumference of the slide pin sliding hole
on the brake support
・ Entire circumference of the brake support boot
groove and end surface of the brake support
・ Outer circumference of the pin bushing (sliding
section)

Caution:
・ Do not use mineral grease.

4) Slightly pull out the slide pin to make sure that the
boot is securely installed to the brake support
groove.

2) Install the boot to the brake support. 5) Move the slide pin to spread the rubber grease over

groove. ・ Do not mix-up the top and bottom of the slide
pin.

6) Install the brake support to the knuckle.

1) Temporarily tighten the disc wheel to the vehicle.
2) Lower vehicle.
3) Final tighten the wheel nut in the order shown in the
diagram.
Tightening torque: 120 N⋅m {12 kgf⋅m / 87 lb⋅ft}

7. Toe-in adjustment
1) Loosen the tie rod lock nut.
2) Rotate the tie rod to adjust the toe-in.
To keep the steering wheel in the center position, adjust
by rotating both of the left and right tie rods only the
same amount.

9. Wheel steering angle adjustment


1) Adjust the wheel steering angle.
The wheel steering angle is not adjustable, but if there is
significant left/right difference, inspect the suspension
arm, knuckle, tie rod, etc., for damage.
If an abnormal condition is not found as a result of
inspection, in the same way as the toe-in adjustment, turn
the left and right tie rods the same amount to make the
left and right steering angles roughly the same.

3) Read the maximum wheel steering angle on the
turning radius gauge.
