Kinetic Molecular Model of Matter
INTERmolecular Forces
-forces that exist between
molecules

INTRAmolecular Force
-forces that hold atoms together
within a molecule
TYPES OF
INTERMOLECULAR FORCES
➢London Dispersion Forces
➢Dipole - Dipole Forces
➢Ion - Dipole Forces
➢Hydrogen Bonding
Polar or Non-polar
LONDON DISPERSION FORCE
-LDF are weak attractions that are used to
explain the attraction between non-polar
molecules.
DIPOLE - DIPOLE FORCES
-Dipole-dipole interactions are electrostatic
interactions between the permanent dipoles of
different molecules.
ION - DIPOLE FORCES
-Ion-dipole forces operate much like dipole-
dipole interactions.
-An ion-dipole force consists of an ion and a
polar molecule aligning so that the positive
and negative charges are next to one another,
allowing for maximum attraction.
HYDROGEN BONDING
-A hydrogen bond is the electromagnetic
attraction created between a partially
positively charged hydrogen atom attached to
a highly electronegative atom, such as
Fluorine, Oxygen, and Nitrogen .
