FIRST SEMESTER 2022-2023
Course Handout (Part II)

Date: 30 August 2022

In addition to part I (General Handout for all courses appended to the time table) this portion gives further
specific details regarding the course.

Course No. : ME F443

Course Title : Quality Control, Assurance and Reliability
Instructor-in-charge : Dr. Sachin Waigaonkar

1. Course Description

Introduction and need of quality control, Statistical Quality Control , sampling and sampling distributions,
confidence intervals, testing significance, statistical tolerance, different types of control charts, statistical
process control techniques, value analysis, defect diagnosis and prevention, basic concepts of reliability,
reliability design evaluation and control, methods of applying total quality management, production process.

2. Defined learning outcomes from the Course

Broadly, this course will prepare the students to use quality engineering techniques and also deal with
management issues related to quality. The following more specific learning outcomes shall be achieved.
Student will be able:
 to define the assumptions, theoretical foundations of statistical quality tools and also justify the quality
improvement based on economic principles;
 to design control charts and draw inferences to bring a manufacturing or other process under control;
 to design control charts for varied challenging situations including those with ability to detect
extremely small deviations;
 to design acceptance sampling procedures for stated levels of risks using single sampling and multiple
sampling plans;
 to plan experiments/trials using full factorial and partial factorial experiment design guidelines and
draw inferences and also setting parameters to realize optimal and robust settings for processes;
 to conduct studies to determine reliability of components and systems.
