Quarter 3 Module 1 Week 1

FRICTION

Let’s Understand

Friction opposes motion. It causes an object that moves along a surface to

slow down and eventually stop. The application of friction is illustrated if you let a
coin roll on the floor. When you drop a coin and a feather at the same time, both
objects will respond to gravity. However, the coin will reach the ground first because
there is another force that affects the feather. When objects move through air, the
force of friction opposes their motion.

PUSHING FORCE MOTION

FRICTION

Friction is a force that opposes motion between two surfaces striking or

touching together. A moving object is affected by friction. However, the amount of
friction may vary depending on the type of surface the object gets in contact with.
You might think that friction is caused by surface roughness merely makes moving
surfaces bounce up and down. Friction is mostly caused by chemical bonding
between the moving surfaces caused by stickiness.
Friction can be kinetic or static. Kinetic Friction is a kind of friction acting on
moving surfaces while Static friction is a kind friction that prevents an object from
moving against a surface.
Kinetic friction is defined as a force that acts between moving surfaces. A
body moving on the surface experiences a force in opposite direction of its
movement. The magnitude of the force will depend on the coefficient of kinetic
friction between two materials. The force that resists the relative movement of the
surfaces once they’re in motion or it is what slows down a moving object.
Static friction occurs in stationary objects that keeps the object at rest. It is a
kind of friction that prevents an object from moving against a surface. Static friction
definition can be written as: The friction experienced when individuals try to move a
stationary object on a surface, without actually triggering any relative motion
between the body and the surface which it is on.
Static friction is greater than kinetic friction because there are more forces at
work keeping an object stationary than there are forces working to resist an object
once it’s in motion.
Static friction is caused by adhesion, light chemical attraction between two
surfaces. The maximum static friction represents the amount of force than needs to
be applied in order to get the objects to move. If the applied force is equal to or less
than the maximum static friction, the object will not move.

1
We use friction in most of our activities. It allows us to grip things and keep
things stable. However, it can cause objects to wear and tear. Friction brings
desirable and undesirable effects to objects and people. Friction could be reduce by
applying lubricants to surfaces, reducing and minimalizing contact between surfaces
and using aerodynamic shapes.

Let’s Analyze

Activity A: Act out the given situation and investigate how friction affects you.

Situation #1
Go to the bathroom and try to walk barefooted. How do you feel?
Situation # 2
Wear your slippers and walk inside your bathroom.
Did the slipper overcome the effect of friction while you’re walking, Yes or No? Why?

Activity B

Which among the pictures shows static friction? Which picture shows kinetic
friction? Explain your answer.

A boy pushing a heavy box A boy riding in a bicycle
