The first of the three influences on the emergence of trends is democracy.
Democracy effectively inhibits many of the roadblocks to the progression of
trends such as the unregulated interventions of the government and the
Church. In the following sections, you will introduce to the notion of democracy
as well as other forms of government that can be considered in overseeing a
State.

II. Discussion
Democracy
The concept of democracy can be attributed to the ancient Greeks
between 500-400 B.C. the term came from Greek words demos, which means
“the people” and krataein, which means “to rule”. Thus, democracy literally
means “rule by the people” it is important to note that originally democracy
was not perceived to be the best form of government. The Greek philosopher
Plato argue that democracy - having popularity as its criterion – has the
tendency to result in tyranny while his students, Aristotle, claimed democracy is
one the three acceptable degenerated forms of government.

Elements of the Modern Democracy

● Rule of Law
Ensures the rights and freedom of the citizens are protected and that “no
one is above the law”
● Separation of powers
Powers is distributed within the government as well to make provisions for
checks and balances and to curb the tendency for democracy to regress
into dictatorship
Basic rights and freedoms
● Suffrage
Every citizen, within the recognized legal age, has the right to
participate in elections by casting vote. People should be the one to choose
the leaders of the state. This right expressly underscores the equality of the
citizens in the eyes of the law since citizen regardless of sex, religion, political
affiliation, educational attainment, and socio-economic status.

● Freedom of Speech
Citizen are able to voice out their disagreement, affirmations,
criticisms, and proposals, to their government. The highlighting the notion
of the rule of the people in a democracy, freedom of speech shows that it
is still the people who decide what happen to their state and how they
want to be led.
● Pluralism
Presence of different religions, political groups, and associations. In
the government, the uninhibited presence of two camps – administration
and opposition – is indicative pluralism.
Dimensions of democracy
● People – citizens the are regarded as equals. However not all citizens are
heave same interest. And with respect of interest, there is a the majority
and minority. in a democracy where issues are decided through a voting
process.

● Equality – people having an equal rights to rule and equal rights to vote.
● Common Good – refers to either what is shared and beneficial for all or
most members of a given community, or alternatively, what is achieved
by citizenship, collective action, and active participation in the realm of
politics and public service.
● Representation -  in government, method or process of enabling the
citizenry, or some of them, to participate in the shaping of legislation and
governmental policy through deputies chosen by them.
Participatory and Representative Democracy
● Participatory Democracy tends to advocate more involved forms of
citizen participation than traditional representative democracy.
● It strives to create opportunities for all members of a population to make
meaningful contributions to decision making, and seeks to broaden the
range of people who have access to such opportunities.
● A hypothetical system where government is heavily decentralized into
smaller independent groups and where randomly selected decision
makers have been chosen to govern, and each group is responsible for
one or several functions in society.
● Representative Democracy is where citizens choose others to represent
them, making important decisions on their behalf.
● It is called "liberal democracy" – in which the people vote for a
government through regular elections with secret ballots and a choice of
candidates. Government is accountable to the people, and has its power
limited in some way, in part by a free press and the individual rights of the
people.
