Topics we have Covered in lecture no.1
 What is HCI
 Field Contributing in HCI

1.what is HCI ?
 Human-Computer interaction is a discipline concerned with the Design ,
Evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for
human use and with the study of major phenomenon surrounding them .
 Human-computer interaction (HCI) is defined as the field of study that
focuses on optimizing how users and computers interact by designing
interactive computer interfaces.

2. Fields Contributing in HCI :

 Psychology

Psychology contributes a scientific approach to how human abillities and

limitations can be taken into account in the design of effective systems.

 Sociology

It is a social science that uses various methods of empirical investigation and

critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about social order, disorder,
and change.

 Computer science

The area of computer Science in HCI studies and develops the

abstractions, techniques languages, and tools to address this problem. This
section of the overview discusses research and practice in the field of user
interface software.

 Design

HCI makes design accessible for their every targeted human regardless of their
mental and physical capabillity.

 Ergonomics

How the technology will fit into the environment with respect to the specific
users.

 Ethnogapgy

It is the study of working place where the technology will be implemented.

 Congnitive Science

The user perceives information ,uses knowledge, and makes decisions, all of

which are the domains of cognitive science. Understanding the user allows
the HCI researchers to predict and explain the interaction that occurs
between the user and the computer science.

 Information security

Security in HCI mainly pertains to information security and improves usability

security features in end-user applications like e-commerce websites or
smartphone applications.

 Electrical emgineering

Personally i would consider any type of electric object that is frequently

operated by a human to be encompassed in HCI, which may include singular
components.

 Usuabillity

Usability is one of the key concepts in HCI => Easy to learn,Easy to remember
how to use ,Effective to use ,Efficient to use ,Safe to use and Enjoyable to use.

Goals of HCI :
The whole theme of HCI is the belief that people using a computer
system should come first. Their needs, capabilities and preferences for
conducting various tasks should direct developers in the way that they design
systems. People should not have to change the way that they use a system in
order to fit in with it. Instead, the system should be designed to match their
requirements.

The goals of HCI are to produce usable and safe systems. In order to produce
computer systems with good usability, developers must attempt to:

 understand the factors that determine how people use technology

 develop tools and techniques to enable building suitable systems

 achieve efficient, effective, and safe interaction

Ergonomics and Human Factors:

The term Human Factors/Ergonomics is used to refer to the field as a whole.
From this perspective more specific domains include driving, health care,
aviation, and human computer interaction. Human factors draws on many
disciplines including psychology; computer science, engineering, mathematics,
medicine and nursing.

 The difference between ergonomics and Human Factors is just like pond
and Sea
 It is the Science of people at work
 Technology will fit into the environment with respect to the specific users.

The goal of human factors is to reduce human error, increase productivity, and
enhance safety and comfort with a specific focus on the interaction between a
human and the thing of interest. The field is a combination of numerous
disciplines, such as psychology, sociology, engineering, biomechanics,
industrial design, physiology, anthropometry, interaction design, visual design,
user experience, and user interface design, so the exact definition of HF/E
varies.
