Section: M2

Experiment No. 4
OXIDATION AND REDUCTION REACTIONS

Procedure:
• Record your observations.
• Identify the elements reduced and oxidized, change in oxidation numbers, number of electrons
gained and lost, and oxidizing and reducing agents.
• Write the balanced chemical equation.
• Summarize the answers in the tables provided.

1. CHLORINE WATER AND POTASSIUM IODIDE

Place 10 drops of 0.1M potassium iodide in a test tube. Add 10 drops of chlorine water to the potassium
iodide. Then add 1 drop of starch solution. Note the resulting color of the solution.

Observations:

Balanced chemical equation:

What substance is responsible for this color with starch?

2. IRON AND CUPRIC SULFATE

Place a piece of untarnished iron nail in 10 drops of 0.1M cupric sulfate solution. Set aside for 10 mins.
Observe Observations:

Balanced chemical equation:

What is the name of the metal deposited?

What substance is responsible for the color change?

3. POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE AND SULFURIC ACID

Place 10 drops of 0.1M potassium permanganate solution in a test tube. Add 2 drops of 6M sulfuric acid.
Add drop by drop 0.1M sodium bisulfite solution until a definite color change is observed.

Observations:

Balanced chemical equation:

H2SO4(aq) + 4KMnO4(aq) + 10NaHSO3(aq) → 6H2O(l) + 2K2SO4(aq) + 4MnSO4(aq) + 5Na2SO4(aq)

What substance is responsible for the color change?

4. POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE AND SODIUM HYDROXIDE

Repeat procedure 3 using 6M sodium hydroxide instead of 6M sulfuric acid. Allow the solution to stand for
about 15 minutes and write observation of any changes.

Observations:

Balanced chemical equation:

2KMnO4(aq) + 3NaHSO3(aq) + NaOH(aq) → 2H2O(l) + K2SO4(aq) + 2MnO2(s)+ 2Na2SO4(aq)

What substance is responsible for the color change?

5. POTASSIUM IODIDE AND FERRIC NITRATE
Place 10 drops of 0.1M potassium iodide in a test tube. Add 10 drops of 0.10M ferric nitrate then 5 drops of
chloroform. Cover the test tube with a cork and shake.

Observations:

Balanced chemical equation:

2Fe (NO3)3(aq) CHCl + 2KI(aq)

3 → 2Fe(NO3)2(aq) + 2KNO3(aq) + I2(s)

What substance is responsible for the color change?
