PART 1
INTRODUCTION
Data is now recognized as a major organizational resource to be attained and managed like other
assets such as land, labor and capital. The ability to structure, access, manage and leverage this
valuable resource is becoming more and more critical to all organizations, large or small, public or
private. Central to supporting this ability, and at the core of every information system, is the
database. Developments in database technology have produced systems that are more powerful and
easier to use, develop, and maintain.
This course will address the theory, application, and management of database technology.

COURSE OBJECTIVES (CO)

1. Understand the relational data model in terms of data structure, data integrity, and data
manipulation.
2. Understand and create conceptual database models utilizing entity-relationship.
3. Understand the theory behind the relational data model as it applies to interactions with
current database management systems.
4. Interpret a given data model to query the database and transform the data into information
using SQL (Structured Query Language).

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO)

At the end of this course, students would be able to:
CLO1 – Ability to understand and design database models (PLO 1, 3)

CLO2 – Ability to extract useful information from a database (PLO 2)

CLO3 - Ability to identify a real life problem and apply the right analytical solutions. (PLO 3, 4)
COURSE CONTENT
1. Database introduction and environment
2. Database Models and basic building blocks
3. Relational Database Model, normalization
4. Entity Relationship Models
5. Structured Query Language
6. Transactions and Management
7. Distributed Databases

POLICY ON PLAGIARISM:
Plagiarism of any kind and to any extent would attract penalties. The assessment would be ‘zero’
for that particular component, with no further opportunity to improve. Repetition of the offence
would result in failure in the subject.
