Passage 1 (item 8-11)
About half a million teenagers across Japan sit standardized university
entrance exams today. Business leaders argue the education system suppresses
creativity and produces skills that are useless in the knowledge economy. Yet
reform has proven elusive. Hagiuda Koichi, the education minister, has been forced
to postpone the introduction of free-response questions—to gauge the ability to
think critically and express opinions—after admitting that there were too few
markers available. A plan for the government to contract out English testing has
also been cancelled.
The annual rite of passage is very stressful for youngsters. Large companies
still mass-recruit directly from universities and screen applicants based on college
rankings; a student’s stumbling in the tests means risking failure for life. The tests
have been blamed for a surge in mental-health problems. Academic failure is the
main reason for suicide among Japanese between the ages of 10 and 19.

A. the current situation of Japanese university entrance exams

A. new English testing could be cancelled
B. students could not express their opinions
C. the education system would produce useless skills
D. free-response questions could be introduced
E. business leaders would avoid employing graduates
11) Which statement can be inferred from the passage?
A. All Japanese students regard the exams as the important step in their
lives.
B. The date for the plan which intends to change English testing has been
already decided.
C. Suicide among Japanese students will absolutely be gotten rid of when
exams are reformed.
D. Free-response questions in the test are partly to blame for suicide among
teenagers in Japan
E. New graduates in Japan may have a higher chance to get a job in a large
company if they graduate from the high-ranking educational institutes.
