Internal Combustion Engine

ME134-2 Week 04
Name: Roubenj S. Estrada Date: 09/09/2022
A five-cylinder, 3.5-liter SI engine operates on a four-stroke cycle at 2500 rpm. At this condition, the
mechanical efficiency of the engine is 62% and 1000J of indicated work are produced on each cycle in
each cylinder.
Calculate:
(a) Indicated mean effective pressure (kPa)
W 1 kJ
imep= = =1429 kPa
Vd (0.0007 m3 )

(b) Break mean effective pressure (kPa)

𝑏𝑚𝑒𝑝 = 𝜂𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑝 = (0.62)(1429 𝑘𝑃𝑎)
𝑏𝑚𝑒𝑝 = 886 𝑘𝑃a

(c) Frictional mean effective pressure (kPa)

𝑓𝑚𝑒𝑝 = 𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑝 − 𝑏𝑚𝑒𝑝
𝑓𝑚𝑒𝑝 = 1429𝑘𝑃𝑎 − 886𝑘𝑃𝑎
𝑓𝑚𝑒𝑝 = 543 𝑘𝑃a

(d) Break power (kW and hp)

Wb= bmep(Vd)(N)/1000(cycle)
Wb= [(886 kpa)(3.5L)(2500rpm/60 sec)] / [(1000)(2)]
Wb= 64.6 kW
Wb= 86.63

(e) Torque (N-m)

bmep ( Vd ) 886 ( 0.0035 )
T= ¿
4π 4π
T= 247Nm
