I. Objectives / Learning outcomes:

1. At the end of each lesson, students in Technical Writing (TW) should be able to:
a. Explain the 5 powers of a Champion Tech. Writer, its characteristics, what people in the
Technical profession are required to write, aspects and styles of TW, basic principles of a
good TW and the ABCs of technical report writing.
b. Definition of Tech. Writing, its characteristics and purpose.
c. Give the distinction between the Literary and Tech. Writing.
d. Techniques of Tech. Writing

II. Outline of Topics / Overview:

1. The five (5) powers of a champion Tech. Writer:


*Taking care of your health
*Seeking Knowledge and skill
*Being valuable to your supervisor and customer
*Having good character traits.
*A wide knowledge of vocabulary.

2. Technical Writing (TW) involves a specific knowledge to convey information for


a specific purpose to specific readers in the field of business, industry, art, science,
trade, technology or profession learned by experiences, study, observation or
investigation.

3. Characteristics of a Tech. Writer:


a. present and explains the subject matter, which observes impartiality,
objectivity, accuracy, conciseness and does not arose emotions.
b. applies complex writing techniques such as definition, classification,
description of mechanism, description of process, cause and effect, comparison and
contrast, analogy and interpretation.
c. it is practical and powerful
d. making use of technical vocabulary together with graphic or visual aids and
conventional report forms.

4. Purposes of Technical Writing:


a. To inform
b. To analyze events and their implications
c. To persuade and influence decisions

8. Distinction between:

Literary Writing Technical Writing


1. Entertains / amuses the reader 1. provide useful information

9. Techniques of Technical Writing:

a. Definition – giving meaning of technical terms that are not familiar to


the reader.

*Classification - formal – (specie/genus/differentiation


informal –

b. Classification – systemic process of dividing materials into kinds of


classes by grouping similar things.

c. Partition – analysis that divides a singular item into parts, steps or


aspects.
d. Description of Mechanism – explaining how something works
e. Description of a Process – explaining how something is done.
f. Cause and Effect – discusses the reason why something is true or the
result of some peculiar event or state of mind.
g. Comparison and Contrast – shows both similarities and differences and
may conclude with a value of judgment.
