TLA1: Reflective Essay

What is Veil of Ignorance of Rawls?

The veil of ignorance is a moral reasoning mechanism designed to enhance unbiased

decision making by preventing decision makers from accessing potentially biased information
about who will benefit the most or least from the available options. As what Philosopher John
Rawls suggests, we should imagine we sit behind the veil of ignorance that keeps us from knowing
who we are and identifying with our personal circumstances. From behind the veil of ignorance,
you might end up being white, black, a person with disability, straight, gay, extremely wealthy, or
living in extreme poverty. By being ignorant of our circumstances, we can more objectively
consider how societies should operate.

From behind the veil, we had opted for a much fairer society that we now have, there would be
extreme freedom and fair equality of opportunity. Approaching tough issues through the veil of
ignorance and applying these principles help us decide more fairly how the rules of society should
be structed. And fairness, as Rawls and many other believe, is the essence of justice.
