PAINTS

THE PAINTS ARE COATING OF FLUID

MATERIAL AND THEY ARE APPLIED OVER THE
SURFACE OF TIMBER AND METALS.

IT IS A LIQUID COMPOSITION AFTER

APPLICATION IT CONVERTS INTO A SOLID
FILM.

Paint
Drier
Base
 Forms the body of the paint.
 Makes the paints film harder &
stronger.
 It makes the paint stable against
Ultra Violet Rays.
BINDER

 It is also known as resin.

 Forms the film of the paint.
 Has Chalk Binding Ability.
 Reduces Cracking & Peeling
THINNER
Can be used to clean equipment and tools
after painting.
It can 'thin' or reduce the viscosity of paint
so it can be used in sprayer applicators.
Prevent paint from hardening when it has
been left open.
Extender

It is also known as filler.

It is added in paint to reduce the
cost.
Modifies the weight of the paint
and makes it more durable.
Drier

Driers are added in paints to

accelerate the rate of drying.
They act as catalysts in the oxidation
process of the drying oils.

TYPES of Paints
FOR INTERIORS : FOR EXTERIORS :
WALLS : • EMULSION
• TEXTURED
• DISTEMPER • CEMENT
• ENAMEL
• EMULSION

METALS :

• ENAMEL

WOOD :

• WOOD FINISH
ENAMEL PAINT
(SYNTHETIC)

Becomes quite hard on drying.

Usually glossy.
Requires thinner.
ENAMEL PAINT
(WATER BASED)

Water Based Paint.

Doesn’t Require Thinner.
Provides Better Durability.
Working Process
EMULSION

Water based special effect paints.

Creates wonderful metallic effects.

This type of paint is costly.

SPRAY PAINTING

Itis a painting technique where a

device sprays a coating through the
air onto a surface.
Has quick drying ability.
Has strong adhesive power
LACQUER Paint

Made from thermoplastic acrylic

resin.
It can provide excellent weather
resistant.
Working Process
HAMMELITE

Provides a smooth gloss finish.

Acts as a durable, corrosion resistant
decorative coating.
Applied on metals, certain plastics and
wood.
PRIMER
Used as preparatory coating before painting.

Ensures better adhesion of paint to the

surface.

Increases paint durability.

Working Process
COLOUR
CONCENTRATE
Used for uniform mixing of colors.

High tinting
strength
Used with
water based All colors

paints intermisscible
Types of brushes :

1) Paint brush
2) Sash brush
3) Varnish brush
4) Wall paint brush
5) Roller brush
PAINT BRUSH

 Used to apply paint or

sometimes ink.

 Available in various sizes,

shapes, and materials.
SASH BRUSH

Has a long slim head and

handle.
Its head shape is ideal for
edging, cutting
VARNISH BRUSH

Designed to apply finishes to

flat surfaces(Mainly Wood).
They are similar in many
ways to flat sash brushes.
WALL PAINT BRUSH

 Similar to Paint Brushes, But

have a Bigger Bristle.
 Sometimes used instead of
Roller Brushes to Paint Walls.
ROLLER BRUSH
A paint roller is a paint application tool
used for painting large flat surfaces rapidly
and efficiently.
Working Process
DISTEMPER
Distempers may be defined as water paints consisting
of whiting (powdered chalk), some coloring pigment
(if desired) and glue size mixed in water.

It is composed of base, carrier, coloring pigments

and glue size.

Chalk is used as base and water is used as carrier

in distemper.
Process of DISTEMPERING

Preparation of Surface

Priming Coat

Coats of Distemper
Preparation of Surface
 Newly plastered surfaces are allowed to
dry for at least two months before the
application of distemper.

 The surface is brushed thoroughly to

make it free from mortar droppings.

 Then the sand paper is rubbed to make

the surface smooth.
Priming Coat
 Two or more coats of primer is
required for new work.
 One or more coats of primer is
required for old work
 Primer Coat is allowed to dry
before applying distemper coat
Coats of Distemper
 The entire surface should be coated
with proper distemper brushes in
horizontal strokes uniformly
followed by vertical ones
immediately.

 The subsequent coats should be

applied only after the previous
coats are dried.
DISTEMPERS (PROPERTIES)
The film is porous allows water vapor to pass through.

 Light in color and they provide a good reflective coating.

 Less durable than oil paints.

 Treated as water paints and easy to apply.

 Not ideal for damp locations such as kitchen, bathroom.

Types of Distemper

1) Dry Distemper
2) Oil Bound Distemper
WHITEWASHING

 It is usually applied to exteriors.

 Occasionally, it is colored and used on structures

 Compatible with masonry because it is absorbed easily

 It can rub off onto clothing to a small degree.

PREPARATION OF
White WASH
The white wash is prepared from fresh white
lime stone.
 The lime is thoroughly slaked ,mixed, stirred
with sufficient water to make a thin cream.

Then it is allowed to stand for 24hrs then shall be screened through a

clean course cloth.
Preparation of surface
Then surface needs to be thoroughly
brushed free of mortar.
In case of old surface the surface
should be thoroughly scraped of and
holes in plaster shall be filled up with
mortar.
The surface shall then be allowed to dry for at least 48hrs
before white washing is done.
Application of whitewash

 The operation for each coat shall consist of stroke given from
top downwards and other from bottom upwards over the first
stroke and similarly one stroke horizontally from right and
another from the left before it dries.

 For new work 3 or more coats shall be applied till the

surface presents a smooth and uniform finish.

 For old work single coat or 2 or more coats shall be applied.

Color WASHING
The mineral colors are added to white wash.
The application process is the same as
whitewashing.
For new work the priming coat shall be of white
wash.
