Structural Steel and Timber Design III Test 1 – First Semester 2010 Page 2 Of 2

QUESTION 1
1.1. The figure below shows a typical frame for a rectangular clad industrial building which is to be constructed
at a new airport in Durban. The building has a height of 10m to the eaves, is 20m wide and 60 m long with
frames at 6 m c/c. The site altitude is approximately 18 m above mean sea level. The interior of the
building is open plan with all four walls equally permeable.

1.2. Calculate the free stream velocity pressure (qz) for the frame. (8)
1.3. Draw a neat sketch of the roof only clearly indicating the in-plane internal and external pressure
Co-efficient considering the wind to 0 degrees only. (7)
1.4. Draw the ultimate loading diagrams for the typical internal rafter in kN/m. (7)
[22]
QUESTION 2
The end of a bolted 60x60x5 equal leg angle is connected as shown below. All holes are drilled and the bolts
will be of length such that the shank will fail in the shear plane. The strength of the member to which the tie is
connected to may be ignored. 5M16 class 4.8 bolts are used and all steelwork to be Grade 350.

2.1. Check and comment on the spacing of the bolts for the given configuration assuming that the length is
sheared. (3)
2.2. Check and comment on gross cross sectional strength of the angle, bolt shear and bearing. (5)
2.3. If you were required to check fracture through the connection and block failure, Calculate the effective area
you would use on lines; 1-2-3 (include the factor for shear lag) and calculate the net areas on lines 1-2 and 2-4
for block failure. (Do not calculate the resistance in kN) (4)
