QUESTION 1

A new grandstand to be constructed in Imbali - PMB for the 2010 world cup is shown below. The site is in an
undeveloped suburb but there is a possibility of developing the area. The overall length of the grandstands is 90m
and the frames are at 10m centres. The approximate site altitude in the area is 650m above mean sea level. Note:
The structure has a high post disaster function.

1.1. Determine the worst case free-stream velocity pressure for this stand. (8)
1.2. Provide neat sketches showing un-factored uniformly distributed load on a typical internal frame. (4)

QUESTION 2

A grade 350W steel frame shown below is used as a support for a sign board over the High way in Durban. The
frame is subjected to loads as indicated at ultimate limit state design. Dimensions in millimeters

2.1. Use any suitable method of analysis to determine the magnitude and nature of the ultimate forces in member
11-12. (6)

2.2. Detail 01 shows a bolted connection at node 4 with 2M12 grade 4.8. All holes to be drilled. The bolts will be of
a length such that the thread will be in the shear plane. The connecting plate is 50x6mm thick plate.
2.2.1. Check and comment on the spacing of the bolts for the given configuration. (2)
2.2.2. Calculate the critical tension resistance of the connection in member 4-8 considering all possible modes of
failure. The strength of the gusset plate may be ignored. (See detail 01) (15)
