My Introspective Self

As a Filipino I’ve observed that I’m influenced more on the eastern traits. It’s
more prominent than my western traits. To elaborate the said traits let me give you a
background of what my cultural self is. Being raised in a home of a stereotypical Filipino
Family, I always found myself rooted in the Filipino values. Such that Respect for your
elders is a must which adheres to the Eastern view of the self that “Conformity and
obedience are essential social behaviors” that keeping personal and social interactions
normal helps people feel secure and competent and to become emotionally competent
and to live in social circumstances, people learn to be aware of social and emotional
emotions and to respond to these appropriately.

Another example is having a strong sense of Family ties which points out the
thought of Confucius on moral character through the concept of virtues that must guide
relationships. And as a person I really observed that I put more great care and diligence
on preserving the sentimental value of things rather than its materialistic value. My
grandparents, are firm believers on the “Law of Karma” that states Individual actions are
subjected to Karma, which results to a good or bad outcomes and “reward and
punishment”. Karma is a law of cause and effect. For example If someone steals a huge
amount from you, then that person would have to face Karma which is bad for that
person in return.

Aside from eastern traits I also possess some characteristics from my western
self, such as being open to change that adheres to the Filipino value of being flexible
and adaptable to different situations just like going with the flow, stand up and speak up
when you have to, without caring too much about other’s opinion, but also, follow your
gut feeling when deciding and becoming a more independent thinker. I’m also a tasked
focus individual that proves my industrious side with a good sense of direction that
leads me to attain my personal success.

The combination of my eastern and western self creates the unique “ME” That
encompasses the different layers of myself. Being able to tackle my different traits as an
individual led me to the conceptualization of my cultural self. Upon the application of the
different perspectives and approaches I was able to distinguish my totality as an
individual. That is why I’m happy for the combination of the mentioned traits.

I feel that Filipino are great individuals of society as they are known for having
multiple layers of the self, they are a mixture of western and eastern self. I’m proud of
my unique Filipino characteristics as it creates a feeling of nationalism on who I am.
Therefore I appreciate my Filipino self as a relational individual. As It keeps on
preserving the relationships of the self to other individuals by giving importance to the
person and feelings. Which is focused in finding the truth and meaning of the “We” that
seeks connection and relation in building a meaningful life. There is much more than
being a Filipino, as the “I” does not remove the self as subject of the object.
