ABSTRACT

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme was aimed at exposing student of higher

institution to acquire industrial skill and practical experience in their approved course of

study and also to prepare students for the industrial work situation which they are likely to

meet after graduation. This report highlights contains a written report of the work done by

me during the four months’ industrial attachment with Broadcasting Service Of Ekiti State

(Progress FM 100.5 ) in Ado Ekiti. This work goes further to share the experiences I had in

the station. This is a brief summary of the things I learnt, the problems I encountered and my

recommendation.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO SIWES

SIWES started in 1974 with 748 students from 11 institutions of higher learning

participating. By 1978, participation on the Scheme increased to about 5000 students from 32

institutions. The ITF withdrew from the management of the Scheme in 1979 owing to

problems of organizational logistics and increased financial burden associated with the rapid

expansion of SIWES. Consequently, the Federal Government funded the Scheme through the

National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education

(NBTE) who managed the SIWES for five years (1979-1984). The supervising agencies –

NUC and NBTE, operated the Scheme in conjunction with their respective institutions during

the period. The industrial Training Fund (ITF) was thereafter directed by the Federal

Government to take charge and resume the responsibility of managing the Scheme in

collaboration with the supervising/regulatory agencies. That is, NUC, NBTE and the National

Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).

1.2 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE SCHEME

To give students the ability to try and apply the given knowledge. The objectives of

SIWES programme are all about strengthening future employees. Such program is successful

attempt to help students to understand the underlying principles of their future work.

1.3 BENEFIT OF THE SCHEME

 Critical thinking

 Initiative

 Resourcefulness leadership

 Presentation skills and interpersonal skills.

1.4 HISTORY OF PROGRESS FM 100.5 IWOROK, ADO EKITI EKITI STATE

Radio Nigeria Progress 100.5 FM, Ado Ekiti is one of the FM Stations of

Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and it was established on the 3rd of February, 2003.

Broadcasting was physically introduced in form of Radio distribution system under the

department of post telegraph by the colonial government in 1933. The main feature then was the

reception of overseas services of the British Broadcasting Commission (BBC) which later

became Radio diffusion system (RDS). The system was officially commissioned in 1933 by

which time the system had spread from Lagos Island to Ikoyi, Ebute Meta and Apapa. In 1943,

the system was opened in Ibadan followed by Kano station which was commissioned in the year

1944. Between 1945 and 1949 stations were opened in the following towns; Kaduna, Enugu,

Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Jos, Calabar and Port-Harcourt. The kind of interest generated by listeners

led the colonial masters to re-examine the entire objective of Radio Broadcasting in Nigeria.

The Nigerialisation of NBC continued gradually until October 1963 when Rev. Victor

Badejo became the first Nigerian General Director of the Corporation. Radio Nigeria began

commercial service in November 1960. This aim was to provide marketing service to Nigeria’s

growing industries and commerce. A progress report on the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission

published by the West African magazine in 31st May 1967 said that, right from start the

2
commercial outfit provided the advertiser with a non wide service unprecedented in the history

of

broadcasting in Nigeria. Radio Nigeria Ibadan came on stream on April 1st 1955 with a short

wave transmitter located at Oke Are area of Ibadan. By December 1957, Ibadan was equipped

with two transmitters’ 10Kw Medium wave and 5Kw Shortwave. The Ibadan studios were

situated at the Oxford House. The installations effectively enabled NBS to commence

broadcasting from four locations across Nigeria. Lagos, Kaduna, Enugu and Ibadan.

The Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Africa’s largest radio network with

six zonal stations in: Markurdi (North Central), Kaduna (North West), Maiduguri (North East),

Enugu (South East), Yenogoa (South South), Ibadan (South West) operating on short and

medium wave bands and two operations centres, as well as over 32 FM stations across the

country, was established by Decree No. 8 of 1978 with sole rights to shortwave or powerful

medium wave broadcasting for effective and simultaneous reception in the country. Ibadan

National Station is a dynamic station that broadcasts in English, Yoruba, Edo, Igala and Urobho

languages. The station is received in Lagos, Ekiti, Edo, Kogi, Ondo, Delta, Oyo, Osun, Ogun,

Anambra and Benue states. With the help of shortwaves transmitter, people in Ghana, Ivory

Coast and other areas of African countries enjoy the station’s news and programmes. A Zonal

Director oversees the station and he is assisted by Deputy Directors and Assistant Directors who

supervise the different Divisions in the station. The divisions are: Programmes, News and

Current Affairs, Engineering Services, Finance, Marketing, Administration, ICT, Audit and

Procurement. The station once operated on three channels namely: Channel One otherwise

known as the station with a vision transmitting on 6.050 KHS 49 meters (shortwave). Channel

Two popularly known as Ore-Ara-Ilu (Friend of the people) transmitting on 657 KHZ 522

meters (Medium wave). The third Channel is Premier FM 93.5 with the pet name, “Your

Dependable Companion”. It transmits programmes in English and Yoruba languages. The

3
station had gone on to expand to coordinate the activities of 7 stations in South West zone of

Nigeria. All stations transmit on FM frequency. Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria is the

trailblazer of broadcast organization in Nigeria which had richly impacted the

Socio-political culture of the nation and sub- Sahara Africa. The Corporation had

metamorphosed to become the largest Radio Network in Africa.

4.0 SKILLS AND KNOWLEGDE ACQUIRED DURING THE TRAINING

4.1 PLACE OF ASSIGNMENT

I was assigned to Progress FM Work Station (News and currents affairs unit). I was briefed

by the News cordinator Mr bankole Oladeji. He mandated me to join in any of the activities

of the news room and learn, as far as the member of staff allows me. He also said I could

check out other offices like the studio and the control room to see what I could also learn

from them. He also said that I could follow reporters out on assignments as far as I am not on

production.

 The Four Cardinal Point Or Functions Of Mass Communications

The four cardinal point or functions of mass communications related to use of language are:

surveillance, correlation, cultural transmission and entertainment. In many ways, the four

functions of mass communication are still relevant and transferable to contemporary media.

Surveillance of the Environment Mass communication exists to observe and inform. Mass

media keeps citizens informed of news and events. In times of crisis, mass media

announcements offer warnings and instructions. For example, when natural disasters occur,

such as hurricanes, blizzards and tsunamis, traditional and social media outlets are the key

communication tools to relay information about the path of an impending storm or to inform

people about school and business closures, and how to seek shelters and find evacuation

routes. Media is also used as tools of government authorities to protect citizen.

2.2 NEWS

The Work Station in Progress FM 100.5 is as good as the News Room. This is where most

of the post production activities take place, from writing of script to editing, etc. Also the

News room is

where the production (desk production) takes place.

This involves gathering of stories and arranging of script; in all these I was involved in:

6
- Writing of scroll messages: We were to check the internet pages of foreign media like

BBC, CNN, News 24, Reuters, etc where we can find foreign and African news stories.

When we

- are done writing we submit it to the producer on duty to vet and send to the Control Room.

These messages are to be inputted into the system to roll at the bottom of the screen of the

channel (Information Bar).

- Going on Assignments: I accompanied reporters on assignments to cover stories. When

we come from the assignment we write our own script and submit to producer to vet.

Then you proceed to voice the report and edit.

- Production: I was expected to join in the production process (pre & post). During

production we are tasked to find stories and their scripts from other news rooms for our

news bulletins. We were also expected to help arrange scripts for the caster et al and do

whatever the producer needed us to do to aid the production process.

- Editing: I was expected to help reporters edit their stories when they came back from

assignments. It was anticipated of me to prepare the weather report for each day.

2.3 CONTROL ROOM

- Scrolls: It was our duty to type scrolls into the system, call for a senior officer to read

before it goes on air. Then when they were done reading, I was to send it on air or keep it

on standby for the Transmission Director.

- Visuals Management: This is part of the production process and this eProgress FM

100.5 ls sending the visuals that are meant to be used for the bulletin to the server so that

they can be ready in time for the news bulletin. This also involves sending your program

to the transmission system so that it can go on air when required. Also I check the server

system to make sure

that all the visuals for the bulletin are available and are playing perfectly.

7
- Audio Management: Here I manage the sound during the news hour. This involves

muting and un-muting of audio channels. The two channels I am managing are the

casters audio and the VTR or servers audio. I also managed the audio level to make sure

the output is not more than the expected quota.

- Directing: I was mandated to direct news bulletins and programs. This involves

changing the video shots that will go live, either from camera to camera or from camera

to server. Also making sure that the shots of the cameras are set before we go live.

- It was required of me to arrange the visuals on the server system according to the way

they have been arranged by the log. Then during the news hour I was to roll or play the

video on air according to the order of the director.

2.4 STUDIO

This is where the main activity takes place, the execution of the script proper. In order words

this where the news is cast from. In here you find furniture’s, cameras, teleprompter,

lightings,

cyclorama, scenery and Chroma-key. I was assigned to:

- Teleprompting: Here I use the teleprompter to first type the script of the caster or

presenter on the computer, then when it is time for him to cast or present, I use the

teleprompter to roll the script for him, to aid his reading.

- Camera Handling: I set cameras before the shoot begins. With the guide of the

director I position the shot of the presenter and as the case may be a guest.

- Stage Management: This involves the setting of the stage for different programs.

2.4 ACHEIVEMENTS & KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED

Speaking of knowledge acquired, I made sure that I for everywhere I entered, either in my

office or other offices, be it consciously or unconsciously I learnt something. Coming to

work every day was an experience to learn from, everyday opening me to one opportunity or

the other.

8
2.4.1 NEWS ROOM

- I learnt about scripting. Most especially the news script, the first thing I had to learn

about scripting was the house style and format of writing a script having learnt that I now

began to go on assignments and when I came back I wrote my own script. After which

the reporter I went out with will assess it and after that, I pass it on to the producer for

final screening. The producer usually tutors me to correct the mistakes I made. After

having learnt how to do this I wrote some scripts that were approved.

- I learnt how to produce news and programs. This came by continuous work with

the Production Editor, the person that works with the producer directly to know what it .

- Progress FM 100.5 is and to this effect I had the opportunity to work as the production Editor

in different occasions.

Where I managed the script, got visual and did whatever the producer wanted for the

production to be successful. And this earned me a lot of end credits at the end of the news.

Also I aided the production of Frontiers. That was like the program I was assigned to. Helping

the producer directly with his work in scripting and production at all stages.

- I got acquainted to video editing with Avid Liquid and Adobe Premiere (Cs6, Cs5 &

Cs3). After learning under one month, I was now a film editor and this was mostly my

duty; editing stories in their numbers for reporters and the film editor for the day’s news

production and this means that, I cut stories that are to long for the producer, edit the end

credit, edit the weather report and edit the teaser & midnews promo. Also I edited

programs of about 27 minutes for Frontiers regularly. All these gained me end credit on

the program and on the news package. In addition, I was of great importance to them

when the templates for editing the teaser, midnews promo, end credit and weather were

deleted I rebuilt them and improved on them. Also I designed end credit templates for

Frontiers and diplomatic ties.

- Networking, like I mentioned earlier, my office has a local area networking system that

connects the systems in the news room with themselves, the control room and other news

9
rooms. I learnt how to navigate it professionally using IP addresses to access them

because most times there is usually network traffic so using that medium made it easy to

transfer and receive video clips.

- Though I didn't learn this there but I was responsible for getting visuals for foreign news

stories. I downloaded clean feed videos and pictures used to make the package

interesting. Also I got pictures to beef up the report of reporters.

2.4. 2 CONTROL ROOM

- I learnt how to direct news and programs. I learnt how to direct using a video switcher

and the Tricaster. Using these devices, I directed 7pm, 1am and 4am news bulletins

severally. Also I directed programs like Diplomatic ties and Frontiers.

- I learnt how to use CG Playout. The software is used to input graphics on air like the

logo and the scrolls. So I got acquainted with the software. Inputting scrolls, meddling

with the graphics of the scrolls and the logo by changing position et al. I was one of the

people mandated to correct the scrolls during news production without errors.

- I learnt the job of the VTR and the audio engineer and played the roles when necessary.

- The VTR is responsible for arranging the stories on the server and playing them on air.

The audio personnel manage the sound during the production.

2.4.3 THE STUDIO

- I adapted to the job of the Teleprompter. This is a device that helps the caster or

presenter look like he or she is reading extempore. The person handling the

Teleprompter types the script into the system using Q-start then when you are done you

roll it for him to read. I was the regular Teleprompter for daily programs.

10
- I learnt how to use the camera basically. Positioning and angling your shot. As a

director

- I learnt the best shots from different angles.

- I also learnt stage management keeping the stage in for each shoot. Also learnt about

Chroma key and how it works.

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 RELEVANCE OF TRAINING

The relevance of this training cannot be over emphasized, it aided the sharpening of inherent

skills and the acquiring of new ones. Also it helped to place high level of relevance on what I

have been taught in school. The relevance of this training to me can be divided into two

broad groups; the relevance to my academics and the relevance to the labour market.

Now in the relevance to academics, across the theoretical knowledge I acquired in school, I

encountered the practical aspect of the knowledge and applied them when necessary. There

are about 12 courses that this training placed relevance on and I have grouped them into six

classes of study.

3.1 NEWS TERMINOLOGIES

These are the terms used in the broadcast world to disseminate and communicate in line with

the ethics of the profession which could be classified as jargons to others who doesn’t

understand such terms.

It includes the following:

Beat: This is the assigned place where a reporter carries out his/her own duty. It could be

from Government house, House of Assembly, Court, among others.

11
Vox Pop: As it sound, which means the voice of the public. Reporters conducting a cross

section interview with the members of the society on their view about a particular issue

happening around them.

Kiss: This means keep it short and simple. A reporter or news writer must present his work

in simple and brief manner so as to hit the point without contradictory or ambiguous

meaning. Avoid the use of too much adjectives and long sentences.

Memo: This is a short write up that disseminate information among members of the

organization.

Proposal Writing: It is the write up of any demand of project that someone is aiming to

achieve.

Bulletin: This is the compiled news script that the news caster wants to cast. He/ she

critically examine and proof read before going ‘on air’.

On Air: This is when a news presentation or program anchor is live from the studio or

broadcast station.

Alignment Desk: This is the desk where files is arrange according to the number and

alignment of the documents.

1. Journalistic Style:

- We were taught about style i.e organizational style & house style. There was a house

style in Progress FM 100.5 for script writing. There was a laid down format for writing

script and doing a lot of other thing and I appreciated and respected that because of the

knowledge I had.

- We were also taught the inverted pyramid style of writing which involved the 5w’s and

1h. I put this into major consideration when writing my intro, knowing full well what an

intro is and how to write it.

12
2. Writing for the Mass Media, News Writing and Reporting & Radio/T.V Script

Writing:

- One of the things you told me that guides the writing pattern of a reporter is the editorial

policy. This I learnt on the job. I learnt how to turn, twist, or slant stories in favor of the

editorial policy.

- You also equipped us with a lot of writing skills, styles & techniques e.g KISS (keep it

short and simple), proximity, prominence, Use of Registers, etc. These helped my

writing skill. For the times I went on assignment, I wrote the intros and narration for the

report.

- It was also made known to us the variances in scripts and the writing attitudes to apply in

each. During my training I mostly encountered the reportorial script. I also extracted

headline international stories from foreign medium for scroll messages.

- We were fore warned of the challenges in news writing and they were encountered. I

must say the news room is truly a mad house, whenever I come back from an

assignment, you are to sit in that noisy office to write your report. Thinking above the

noise wasn’t easy.

3. Foundation of Broadcasting, Radio & T.V Operations, Broadcast Presentation and

Radio & T.V Reportage & Production.

13
These were the courses that formed most of the background for my work there. During my

time of service, I contributed mostly to the production process of news bulletins. From going

on assignments, editing, etc. The following points of knowledge aided my work:

- The broadcast chain, this is the production process, where it begins from and where it

ends.

- Studio devices like the tricaster, microphone, computer, video switcher, mixers, cameras,

lights, etc.

- Who a real broadcaster is and the traits that are inherent in him.

- The nature and characteristics of a studio. The different backgrounds, the furniture’s

and equipment’s of the studio.

- The working language of the media house. The accepted working language and

pronunciation.

14
4. SCREEN PRODUCTION AND DIRECTING:

- This course enlightened the trainee to the duties of the director and the producer, and

during the training he was exposed to the practical job of a director as he became a

director par excellence. Also working with producers over time made me understand

who they were really.

- The trainee saw the different production crew member and their functions as he even

played most them. Duties like the production Editor, the film Editor, the typist,

engineers, etc.

- The different kind of shots I learnt about helped me to know the right shots to use even

as a director and as film Editor.

5. FILE PROCESSING AND DESKTOP PUBLISHING.

- The major objective of this course is to learn basic skill on the use of Microsoft word

and the general system file management. Like the trainee said earlier, there is an

existing networking system in Progress FM 100.5 and each reporter (interns included)

is expected to have folders in all the system to enable them to move clips from place to

place, I was able to master this act.

- The trainee was also taught about shortcuts on the keyboard. And these are to speed up

- work speed. So when at work and we are at the rush hour and we need to move clips

from place to place the short cut come in handy.

15
6. INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATIONS

- Intercultural communication is about interrelating with cultures, Progress FM 100.5

practices intercultural communication because they broadcast home based content to the

world and it international because Progress FM 100.5 is a satellite stations that shows

on DStv and Sky.

- Based on my observation and the operations of Progress FM 100.5 they represent and

support the reformist school of thought, Progress FM 100.5 is trying to balance the

concept of cultural imperialism, media imperialism and a free and balanced flow of

news and information.

- Although not taught in class every news bulletin must have a taint of foreign

information. When writing your script you write with the mindset that you are writing

for an international audience, in that light you are conscious of things like time.

- Mass media dependency: Progress FM 100.5 was depending on foreign media and other

Nigerian media.

Now moving on to the relevance of the training on the labour force.

- I have gotten skills and training that I should have paid money to acquire but I got them

there easily. And these skills have added value to my curriculum vitae

- I had an opportunity to learn from the best of the best. Working in the headquarters of

Progress FM 100.5 was a privilege as I was exposed to the best. I had an opportunity to

be tutored by the likes of Kemi Fakeye, Adebola Brookslyn Sunday, Chinedu Obike, etc

16
- I have learnt to survive in a hostile environment where there are a lot of contentions

between the staff and being careful not to be caught up in the cross hairs.

- I learnt some on field experience, like been stood up, been to wait for hours just to get

interviews, etc. Not to mention the attitudes of gathering contacts wherever we go.

- This training took place in Abuja for six months and I used the time to get accustomed

to another Nigerian city, their road network, practices, etc.

- Abuja been a semi arewa community, in my office Hausa is more less like the lingua

franca and most of them were muslims. I learnt to work with them regardless of tribe

nor religion.

- In my office we had 5 managers and these managers had their different was of operating

so whenever I found myself working with any of them I work with them according to

their patterns in other ensure a smooth working condition.

17
CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 SUMARRY, CONCUSSION AND RECOMMENDATION

4.1 SUMARRY

The success of my training is undisputed, but it was not devoid of rough edges. I experienced

some challenges, among these are:

- The issue of expensive transportation: I have to pay an average of 500 naira every day

for transport without remuneration.

- My colleagues (other interns) in the office were not ready to be dedicated to the job as I

was, so this was a great burden upon me because every member of staff was now

depending on me to carry out assignments when there were other hands. This made me

work overtime sometimes & it was favorable coming back late to a family house.

- Progress FM 100.5 been a government owned media comes with its own lapses. The

bureaucratic system is rigid and before things are done its takes so much time. This

affected the conducive working environment for the members of staff in that whenever

machines are bad and need repairs it takes so much time before it gets attended to. This

system made work so tedious and cumbersome.

18
4.2 RECOMMENDATIONS

- I strongly recommend that students undertaking internship should understand the

importance of the training and not joke about it. They should use the opportunity to be

hard working and enterprising.

- I strongly recommend that the supervisors that come to invigilate the students should be

familiar with the student and be at least in the social management sciences. This is

because is a lecturer from the School of Busines Studies.

- Also the number of visits during the training period should be increased.

4.3 CONCLUSION

My working experience with the Progress FM 100.5 has brushed me up and unveiled the

inner me turning me into a breaded reporter. I want to thank the management of Progress FM

100.5 for the opportunity to serve diligently. This has placed relevance on who I am.

To the few interns that worked hand in hand with me like Auta Mercy, et al I want to

appreciate your humility. Then to the members of staff that contributed immensely to my

training I salute you. And may all the seeds I sowed in Progress FM 100.5

In conclusion, there were many things that I have experience and learnt during this

period. The whole training period was very interesting, instructive and challenging. Through

this training, I was able to gain new insights and more comprehensive understanding about the

real industry working condition and practice. It has also provided me the opportunities to

develop and improve my soft and functional skills. All of this valuable experience and

knowledge that I have gained were not only acquired through the direct involvement in task

19
given but also through other aspect of the training such as work observation, interaction with

colleagues, superior, and other people related to the field. From what I have undergone,

I am very sure that the industrial training program has achieved its entire primary

objectives. It’s also the best way to prepare students to face the real working life.
