Directions/Instructions:
1. You are encouraged to use a calculator (i.e. scientific calculator) in solving. 2. If
the spaces provided are not enough, you may write and show your solutions on
another sheet/s of paper.
3. The activities presented here will help you in the attainment of the learning
competencies. Read every instruction and do each activity with understanding.
Activity Proper:
Activity No. 1: Force and Motion: Let Newton Be!
1. Stell and Paulo are arguing in the cafeteria. Stell says that if he flings his jelly
with a greater speed it will have a greater inertia. Paulo argues that inertia does
not depend upon speed, but rather upon mass. Who do you agree with? Explain
why.
Paulo is right since inertia is a property that entirely depends on mass,
i.e., more mass equates to more inertia. The ability of matter to resist
changes in velocity (speed and/or direction) is known as inertia. Another
physical variable that depends on both mass and speed is momentum.
Furthermore, momentum will be addressed in a later unit.
2. The Fnet = ma equation is often used in algebraic problem solving. Fill the blanks

6. A gymnast with mass suspends herself from the lower end of a hanging rope of
negligible mass. The upper end of the rope is attached to the gymnasium ceiling.
If the weight of the gymnast is 490 N, what is the tension at the top of the rope,
TC on R ? Show your solution/derivation.
Solution and Answer:
(a)
w = (50) (9.8)
Answer: 490 N
(b)
Σ Fy = T - w = 0 (Newton's first law)
Answer: T = W = 490 N
(c)
Σ Fy = T - w = 0 (Newton's first law)
Answer: T = W = 490 N
