Activity 1.2. Who Changes First?
Materials:
3 transparent containers
3 plastic spoons
Hot water, tap water, cold water
Powdered juice

Procedure:
1. Fill the three containers separately with cold water, tap water, and hot water.
2. With the spoon, place powdered juice into the center of each container as shown in
the figure. Note: It is better if you place powdered juice into the three samples
simultaneously.

3. Carefully observe and compare the behavior of the powdered juice in the three containers. Write down your
observations in Table 2.
If there is no available thermometer, you may use these descriptions
to indicate the temperature of water:
cold water - cold
Tap water - slightly warm
Hot water - hot

GUIDE QUESTIONS
Q1. What did you observe when the powdered juice is added to each container? Record your
observations in Table 2.

Q2. Which container did the powdered juice dissolve first? Which dissolved last?
Q3. How do you relate the temperature of water to the rate of movement of molecules of
the dye?
