COURSE OUTLINE

COURSE TITLE: TOUR 209 TRAVEL WRITING AND PHOTOGRAPHY

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND CONCEPTS:


At the successful completion of this course, students will have learned the
essentials of travel writing and photography, in addition to how to prepare article
proposals and transform research-based travel writing into publishable
manuscripts. They will also have learned how to submit a piece of writing for
publication.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
 Learn how to use the fundamental elements of photography and writing in ways
that convey a sense of place.
 Create expressive photographs that reveal your unique impression of a
destination through assignments, location shoots and the completion of a
personal project.
 To be able to use concrete detail, point of view, character development,
captivating dialogue and scene-by-scene construction.

3. Photo Essays: Visually Telling your Travel Stories/ Creating a Visual,
Emotional and Intellectual Journey.
Relating travel photos to one another (distilling visual themes) through subject
matter, light, color, composition, texture, pattern, design and detail.
Combining images that take the viewer on an emotional or intellectual journey.
Sequencing - Enhancing with text, music or narration
Building a body of work

4. How-To Write an Informative, Sellable Travel Article


Write: Explore for a day in your community. Take notes about specifics like the
cost of museum admission (are there any free days?), the hours of operation, the
price of food.
Afterwards write a 500-word description about your neighborhood in a way that
evokes place for a person who has never been there.

5. Storytelling as a function of travel writing


Write a draft of your travel narrative essay (these should be no longer than 1500
words) and post your essay in your writing group. Respond and give feedback to
your peers as well.

6. Ethics of Travel Writing and Audience and Niche


Begin following writers you admire and the editors mentioned in the market research
assignments on social media. See if they have blogs and read a couple entries.
