Pump Upgraded LMX BMX 33x Gearbox 40-20-25 Field Engineering Bulletin
Pump Upgraded LMX BMX 33x Gearbox 40-20-25 Field Engineering Bulletin
In response to the continuing customer-driven requirement to improve reliability of our products, Sundyne
Corporation is pleased to introduce and release an upgraded gearbox design that replaces the former
GB01AG05, GB01AG07, and GB01AG09 module configurations. This product improvement affects all
field installations of Sundyne pump and compressor models LMV/BMP-331, LMC/BMC-331,
LMV/BMP-333, LMC/BMC-333, LMC/BMC-337, and BMP-338.
The upgraded LMV/BMP-331 gearbox is identified by the new module numbers GB01AG10 and
GB01AG11. GB01AG10 module is for the option of 16 pitch gears on the output shaft. The upgraded
LMV/BMP-333 and BMP-338 gearbox is identified by module number GB01AK09. Exchange gearboxes
will conform to the new configuration as of September 1, 2003.
Repair parts for the old configurations will still be available with an extended delivery schedule.
The cross-sectional drawing, on page 4, identifies the areas of improvements which are summarized as
follows:
1. Input shaft bearings (Items 125C and D) are changed to spherical roller bearings to increase the
calculated L10 life by an order of magnitude. Spherical roller bearings can withstand up to 2° of
misalignment.
2. Lower idler shaft ball bearing (Item 125A) changed to Ø 1.75 inch (Ø 44.5 mm) hydrodynamic
bearing design for higher shaft speeds and greater load capacity.
3. New internal oil pump (Item 160) delivers 12% more oil flow to accommodate the additional idler
shaft journal bearing.
4. Fluoroelastomer O-rings are used to seal the gearbox split lines (Item 936AG).
5. Gear ratios, output shaft and bearings, and mounting configurations will not change therefore
hydraulic/aerodynamic performance of a converted unit is not affected.
6. Oil pressure relief valve (Item 175) has been changed to a spring type design. Internal Viton O-ring
controls re-seating pressure. Existing units mount the relief valve on the lower side of the bearing
plate. The longer relief valve configuration requires an elbow for lower side installation. New units
mount the relief valve on the upper side of the bearing plate; no elbow is needed.
The following list compares old Sundyne part numbers to new Sundyne part numbers.
*** If any idler shaft component or the lower gearbox housing listed under “old designation” is to be
replaced, all the components listed under “new designation” and noted by *** must be replaced.
Note 1: The first time a customer converts to the SH01AD06 shaft assembly, a conversion kit will need to
be purchased. Conversion kit KT01AD62X1 contains (1) BE09AG17A, (1) WA05AW02, (2) 14-
223UC, (1) GK01AA01, (1) HO05AD13X1, and (1) instruction manual.
**** To convert from split line gaskets to split line O-rings the bearing plate and lower gearbox housing
listed under “new designation” must also be changed.
Two maintenance and operating practices will also change with the upgraded gearbox. First, the
preferred gearbox lubricant will change to ISO viscosity grade 46. Second, greater care must be taken
when installing the upper gearbox housing because of the spherical roller bearings. Before installing the
upper gearbox housing, lubricate the upper housing bearing bores and bearing outside diameters with
gearbox oil. Use a machinist level to position the outer race of the upper input shaft bearing and ensure
that the idler shaft is in its proper location before installing the upper gearbox housing. Use the level on
top of the upper gearbox housing while lowering it into position. If difficulty persists, slightly expand the
upper bearing bores by heating the upper gearbox housing in an oven to 200 °F (93 °C), then proceed
with installation using proper safety procedures.
The pressure relief valve was changed from a stem type design to a spring type design for increased
reliability. Due to the increased length of the new relief valve, the valve location on new unit/gearbox
purchases has been moved from the lower side of the bearing plate to the upper side of the bearing plate.
For the existing field population, the new valve is to be installed with a street elbow into the lower side of
the bearing plate, see photos below. By utilizing an elbow an extra half inch of space is gained allowing
the idler shaft to be moved to the side for the installation of the low speed shaft. Relief valve assembly
number VA01AG01 includes an elbow to simplify gearbox assembly. This assembly can be purchased
from Sundyne Corporation.
Idler shaft
The relief valve internal o-ring was changed from Teflon to Viton material to control the needle and seat
so that the designed re-seating pressure can be obtained.
Upgraded LMX/BMX-33X gearboxes have been operating successfully in the field since 2003. Sundyne’s
Exchange Gearbox Program offers the greatest value for your equipment investment. OEM quality
components are used throughout the exchange gearbox, field assembly is eliminated, and credit is given
when the old gearbox is returned. Exchange gearboxes are warranted for 12 months from start up or 18
months from date of shipment.
Sundyne Corporation is confident these gearbox improvements will lead to increased reliability and unit
life for all installations. For more information about these upgrades, contact the Field Service Groups at
our manufacturing facilities located in Arvada, Colorado, U.S.A. and Dijon, France.
