Prelim Week 1

CHAPTER 1 –
The Human Body: An Orientation

Activity 1: Demonstrating the Anatomical Position ( page 1)

• Stand and assume the anatomical position. Hold your hands unnaturally forward instead of
partially cupped toward your thighs.

Activity 2: Locating Body Landmarks

( page 2)
• Anterior Body Lanbdmarks
Identify and use anatomical terms to correctly label the following regions.
1. Abdominal
2. Antecubital
3. Axillary
4. Brachial
5.Buccal
6.Carpal
7.Cervical
8.Coxal
9.Deltoid
10. Digital
11. Femoral
12. Fibular
13.Inguinal
14. Mammary
15.Manus
16. Nasal
17. Oral
18. Orbital
19.Patellar
20. Pelvic
21. Pubic
22. Sternal
23. Tarsal
24. Thoracic
25. Umbilical

• Posterior Body Landmarks

Identify and appropriately label the following body surface regions.
1. Cephalic 9.Scapular
10.Sural
11.Verterbral
2.Femoral
3.Fibular
4.Gluteal
5.Lumbar
6.Occipital
7.Popliteal
8. Sacra

Activity 3: Using Anatomical Terminology (page 4)

Activity 4: Learning Body Cavities

1. Dorsal- The dorsal cavity is at the posterior, or back, of the body, including both the head and the back
of the trunk. The dorsal cavity is subdivided into the cranial and spinal cavities.

The cranial cavity fills most of the upper part of the skull and contains the brain.
The spinal cavity is a very long, narrow cavity inside the vertebral column. It runs the length of the trunk
and contains the spinal cord.

2.Ventral- The ventral cavity is at the anterior, or front, of the trunk. Organs contained within this body
cavity include the lungs, heart, stomach, intestines, and reproductive organs. You can see some of the
organs in the ventral cavity . The ventral cavity allows for considerable changes in the size and shape of
the organs within it as they perform their functions. For example, organs such as the lungs, stomach, or
uterus can expand or contract without distorting other tissues or disrupting the activities of nearby
organs.

Activity 5: Locating Abdominal Surface Regions

1. Four Quadrants-. Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ) associated Organs

RUQ associated organs are – Small bowl, Liver, gallbladder, Pylorus, Duodenum, Head of
pancreas, Right kidney and the right adrenal gland, Hepatic flexure of colon. A portion of
ascending and transverse colon.

Left Upper Quadrant Associated (LUQ) Organs LUQ organs are –Small bowl, left lobe of Liver,
Spleen, Stomach, Body of pancreas, Splenic flexure of colon, A portion of transverse and
descending colon, A portion of the left kidney and left adrenal gland

Right Lower Quadrant, or RLQ, you find the cecum, appendix, portions of small intestine, right
reproductive organs, and the right ureter

The left lower quadrant houses the majority of the small intestine, some of the large
intestine, the left half of the female reproductive system, and the left ureter

2. Nine Regions
