Lesson Plan in Science 8

Balanced and Unbalanced Forces

I. CONTENT STANDARD: The learners demonstrate understanding of Newton’s Three Laws of

Motion work using constant force, power, gravitational potential energy, kinetic energy, and
elastic potential energy.

Learning Competency: Infer that when a body exerts a force on another, an equal amount of
force is exerted back on it. S8FE-Ia-16

Objectives: At the end of the session, the students should be able to:
1. Describe the conditions when two forces balance
2. Explain the effect of balanced forces on the state of motion of an object.

II. SUBJECT MATTER: Balance and Unbalanced Forces

SCIENCE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS:

 Balanced Forces – Forces acting on an object which does not change the state of
rest or of uniform motion of it are called balanced forces.
 Unbalanced Forces – The resultant of two opposite forces acts on an object and
brings it in motion. These opposite forces are called unbalanced forces.
MATERIALS:
 TV, HDMI, Laptop
 Power point presentation
 Activity sheets
 Video presentation

SCIENCE PROCESSES:
Basic: Describing, Explaining

VALUES INTEGRATION: Demonstrate help, communication, respect, and unity among each
other.

III. LEARNING TASKS

A. ELICIT: (5mins)
Review learner’s previous knowledge by asking them the following questions;

1.What are the example of forces?

2.What are the three laws of motion?
B. ENGAGE: (10mins)
Learners will be given time to watch a video about balanced and unbalanced forces
and afterwards, ask them the following questions;

1. What is a balanced force?
2. What is an unbalanced force?

C. EXPLORE: (15 mins)

The class will answer the classroom activities for Balanced and Unbalanced Forces.
Activity 1 will be Balance of Forces, in this activity the learners shall be able to examine the
situation when forces are balanced and explain the effects of balanced forces on the state of
motion of an object. (please see attached activity sheet)
For the second activity, Unbalanced Forces, the learners shall be able to examine
situation when forces are unbalanced and explain the effects of unbalanced forces on the
state of motion. (please see attached activity sheet)

Activity 2. Unbalanced Forces

D. EXPLAIN (20min.)
Representatives from the class will present their work and give a short discussion of
their answers to the activity. The teacher will then explain the balance and unbalanced
forces and its related concepts.

E. ELABORATE(5min.)
After the discussion the teacher shall present two pictures to the students. The
leaners shall study the given pictures and escribe the forces involved.

F.

EVALUATE (10mins.)
Direction: Read each statement carefully and write the letter of the correct answer.

1. ______________ refers to when a force is equal and opposite.

*A. balanced force
B. unbalanced force
C. magnitude
D. friction

2.When one force in a pair is greater than the other, we call this:
A. balanced force
*B. unbalanced force
C. magnitude
D. friction

3. If two forces are acting on an object they are equal in magnitude

A. and equal in direction
*B. and in opposite direction
C. cancel each other
D. none of the above

Two tugboats are moving a barge. Tugboat A exerts a force of 3000
N to the left. Tugboat B exerts a force of 5000N in the same
direction.

a. Draw arrows showing the individual forces of the tugboats in #1.

b. Are the forces balanced or unbalanced? ______________
c. In what direction will the barge move? ________________

G. Extend
Directions: Fill the blanks with correct answers/words. Choose your answers from
the word bank provided. Write your answers on your separate sheet of paper.

1. Any push or pull is called ____________.

2.___________ refers to the size or strength of the force while __________ points
to where the object goes. The direction of the arrowhead indicates the direction
of the force. The length of the arrow represents the amount of force (relative
magnitude).
3.There are two types of forces, namely __________ and __________.
4.Applied, friction, normal and tensional forces are examples of _____________
forces.
5.Gravitational and magnetic forces are example of _____________ forces.
6. ____________ are forces that are equal in magnitude but opposite in direction.
7.____________ are forces that cause a change in motion of an object.
8.The sum of all forces are acting in an object is called ___________.
9.If the forces in an object are balanced, the net force is __________.
10. If the forces in an object are unbalanced, the net force is _________.
