Article Summary

Through Braun and Clarke's (2006) six step technique to thematic analysis and its
connection to the social constructionist paradigm, this thesis analyzes the 2010 book A Manual for UN
Mediators: Advice from UN Representatives and Envoys to determine which skills and strategies they are
advising. Social constructionism asserts that all mediation techniques are founded on presuppositions of
ideology or values. Therefore, the underlying ideas are examined and explored in order to assess and
discuss the identified recommendations. Specifically, through the prisms of a transformative and problem-
solving mediation technique. As a result, 12 themes relating to suggested mediation abilities and tactics
are found, with both mediation philosophies being noted in the themes relating to the strategies and
explored in this context.

The advice and suggestions in the handbook that correspond to two of these mediation strategies
will be examined in this thesis to see how they are shaped by the underlying presuppositions. The
methods were chosen because they are based on fundamentally diverse underlying theories that could
result in various short- and long-term consequences. A more in-depth assessment of the conflict between
the transformative and problem-solving approaches will be offered in the section following. The chapter
will begin by introducing international mediation in light of recent research. The discussion of the two
strategies will then be expanded upon. The chapter will conclude with a discussion of how the two
methods might be used to understand the United Nations' role in international mediation.
