Problem Set 01
Solve the following problems completely. You can follow the presentation in the examples. Make your solution
systematic and sketch and label diagrams when necessary. DO NOT FORGET TO WRITE YOUR NAME on every
sheet.

1. Which of the following equations are dimensionally correct?

(a) 𝑣 = 𝑣𝑖 + 𝑎𝑥
(b) 𝑦 = (2 𝑚) 𝑐𝑜𝑠 (𝑘𝑥), where 𝑘 = 2 𝑚 .
Show your solution.

2. Each of the following equations was given by a student during an examination:

(a) 𝑚𝑣 = 𝑚𝑣 + 𝑚𝑔ℎ
(b) 𝑣 = 𝑣 + 𝑎𝑡
(c) 𝑚𝑎 = 𝑣 .
Do a dimensional analysis of each equation and explain why the equation can’t be correct.

3. The speed of light is about 3.00 × 10 𝑚/𝑠. Convert this figure to miles per hour.

4. A firkin is an old British unit of volume equal to 9 gallons. How many cubic meters are there in 6.00 firkins?

5. Two points are given in polar coordinates by (𝑟, 𝜃) = (2.00 𝑚, 50.0°) and (𝑟, 𝜃) 5 (5.00 𝑚, 250.0°),
respectively. What is the distance between them?

6. Three displacements are 𝐴⃗ = 200 𝑚 due south, 𝐵⃗ = 250 𝑚 due west, and 𝐶⃗ = 150 𝑚 at 30.0° east of north.
Construct a separate diagram for each of the following possible ways of adding these vectors:
(a) 𝑅 ⃗ = 𝐴⃗ + 𝐵⃗ + 𝐶⃗
(b) 𝑅 ⃗ = 𝐵⃗ + 𝐶⃗ + 𝐴⃗
(c) 𝑅 ⃗ = 𝐶⃗ + 𝐵⃗ + 𝐴⃗

7. A girl delivering newspapers covers her route by traveling 3.00 blocks west, 4.00 blocks north, and then 6.00
blocks east. (a) What is her resultant displacement? (b) What is the total distance she travels?

8. A ball is thrown vertically upward with a speed of 25.0 𝑚/𝑠. (a) How high does it rise? (b) How long does it
take to reach its highest point? (c) How long does the ball take to hit the ground after it reaches its highest
point? (d) What is its velocity when it returns to the level from which it started?

9. A truck covers 40.0 𝑚 in 8.50 s while uniformly slowing down to a final velocity of 2.80 𝑚/𝑠. (a) Find the
truck’s original speed. (b) Find its acceleration.

10. A person takes a trip, driving with a constant speed of 89.5 𝑘𝑚/ℎ, except for a 22.0 − 𝑚𝑖n rest stop. If the
person’s average speed is 77.8 𝑘𝑚/ℎ, (a) how much time is spent on the trip and (b) how far does the person
travel?
