The Care and Feeding of A Candle

Owen Cayton, Senior Minister pastor@fcc-stillwater.org Greetings to you from General Assembly in Nashville, Tennessee! All of my life I have been going to General Assembliesfrom a time before I could walk or speak I have been attending. I cant say that I have made it to all of them in my lifetime, but I have come pretty close. I have always loved General Assembly. It has always been an opportunity to reconnect with my every-two-years friends and catch up with what they are doing. I always enjoy going through the exhibit hall and gathering information about different programs and services offered by organizations of the church. Though, I must say that my reasons for loving the exhibit hall have changed since I was a child: when I was about 10 years old at the Anaheim assembly, I made a hat out of most of the handouts which landed me on the 5 oclock news in Los Angeles. I have no idea why I wasnt discovered?!? I have also always been energized by General Assembly, energized about the church. I get excited about what the church is doing and how God is working in churches like ours around the country and around the world. The preaching is almost always great and I come away very hopeful about the gospel, the churchs mission in the world, and the ways we can be engaged with each other in ministry. Since I have been ordained and serving church, I must admit a little selfishnessI also really enjoy bragging about my church. This year it has been a particular pleasure bragging about the work that we are doing here in Stillwater. Telling people about our second Mission Camp, about all the great things that happened last year and the exciting prospects that this new event brings, that the event has grown, that it brings people in our congregation together in ways that they have not been before, how it fuels our passion for mission and ministry, well its just cool to see other ministers and friends get excited about what is going on in our church. Even talking about how we are meeting the challenges we are facing together as a congregation provides an opportunity to brag on our congregation. I have said before we are not the only congregation facing these same challenges. My clergy colleagues, laypersons from churches all over the country and I share together different ways of meeting these challenges. I have had the opportunity to share with people the work of the Financial Action Committee and the faithfulness with which they have gone about their task, how the elders are working to step-up to re-claim the pastoral part of their role in the church, and how the vision team is working to help name the vision of the congregation. We are doing good work. As we open ourselves up to the Spirit of God and work to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world, we are really joined by people across the country and around the world. The work we do in Stillwater is multiplied sometimes 100 fold, sometimes 60 and sometimes 30! Shalom, Pastor Owen
