STUDY GUIDE FOR UNIT NO. 2

Unit 2: TARGET SETTING

Lesson 1 – Standards-based Assessment

Lesson 2 – Appropriate Targets
Lesson 3 – Unpacking Learning Competencies

OVERVIEW

Target Setting is requisite to efficient and effective teaching- learning process. Being able to set a
clear and coherent learning targets will enable teachers to propel their classroom instruction towards the
notable “outcomes-based education” (OBE). Further, these learning targets when translated into learning
outcomes will capacitate both teachers as well as students in keeping track of how much learning had taken
place.

In this particular unit, discussion on the rudiments and rigors of goal setting will be undertaken.
Among these are the basic tenets of standards-based assessment, the elements of an appropriate learning
target, and the art of unpacking learning competencies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the rigid analysis and comprehension on this module, learners are expected to:

a. craft an appropriate learning objectives and outcomes that are constructively aligned with national
standards.

LEARNING ACTIVITY 3

1. Explain the art of unpacking learning competencies. Answer should only be a page long.
2. Write three (3) examples of learning objectives (one example for each domain of learning), then label
its component parts correctly.

SUMMARY

 Target setting capacitates both teachers as well as students in keeping track of how much learning
should be realized.
 In setting targets, the constructive alignment as well as the K-12 assessment guidelines should be
taken into account.
 When writing a SMARTER learning target, it is imperative that all the elements of a clear and
appropriate leaning targets across all domains of learning should be present.
 Learning competencies are large volume of knowledge, thus, they have to be broken into smaller
chunks of concepts (reduce to learning objectives) for an easier processing of information.
 All learning objectives should emanate from the prescribed learning competencies.
