VERB COLLOCATIONS

 Verbs coloocations, in the englosh language,


collocation refers to a natural combination of
words that are closely affiliated with each
other. Some exmaples of verb collocations are “
pay attetion” “fast food” etc…

COLLOCATIONS WITH “GO”


1. Go abroad :
e.g:
i think we should go abroad on holiday this year

2. Go astray:
e.g:
jhon Will go astray if he becomes Friends with
bad Jack

3. Go bad:
E.g:
The milk Will go bad if it is not kept in the fridge

4. Go bald
e.g:
many men go bald at an early age
5. Go bankrupt
e.g:
the company is about to go bankrupt

6. Go blind
e.g:
the old cat is starting to go blind

7. Go crazy
e.g:
the old man is going to go crazy

8. Go deaf
e.g:
many old people go deaf

9. Go fishing
e.g:
i would like to go fishing this weekend

10. Go insane
e.g:
if you don’t stop making that noise, i’m going to
go insane

COLLOCATIONS WITH “HAVE”


1. Have a baby (to give birth to a baby)
e.g:
my grandmother had all her babies at home

2. Have a backache
e.g:
my father has a backache so he couldn’t sleep
well

3. Have a bath
e.g:
I can’t remember the last time I had a bath

4. Have a bite
e.g:
can I have a bite of your hot dog?

5. Have a break
e.g:
let’s have a break when you finish this exercise

6. Have a business trip


e.g:
my dad has a business trip so we could not visit
our grandmother together.

e.g:

8. Have a conversation/chat
e.g:

e.g:

COLLOCATIONS WITH “MAKE”

1. MAKE A MESS:
e.g:
if rich kids make a mess, their servants tidy
things up again.

2. Make a mistake
e.g:
whenever we make mistakes, our teacher
corrects them for us.
3. Make a note (of)
e.g:
I’d better make a note of that, or I might forget.

4. Make a reservation
e.g:
shall I make a reservation for 8 o’clock at that
Japanese restaurant?

5. Make a takeover bid


e.g:
the company made a takeover bid for one of its
rivals.

6. Make an appearence
e.g:
we waited for thirty minutes for the professor

e.g:

trip.

e.g:
he gave me a chance and i took it gadly.

e.g:
i was giving no choice. I had to go to the boring
lecture.

4. Give a damn
e.g:
she doesn’t give a damn about her job.

5. Give a hand
e.g:
can I give you a hand with those bags?

6. Give a headache
e.g:
that loud music is giving me a headache
7. Give a hug or Kiss
e.g:
come here and give me a Kiss!

8. Give a lecture/speech/performance
e.g:
the president Will give a long speech..

9. Give the impression


e.g:
the man gave the impression he wasn’t telling
th whole truth.

10. Give somebody a lift


e.g:
can you give me a lift to the post office on your way
to work?

COLLOCATIONS WITH “DO”


1. Do a course
e.g:
we’re doing a course at the local university

2. Do a deal
e.g:
have you done any deals with distributors in
Asia yet?

3. Do a favour
e.g:
can you do me a favor?

4. Do a Good/great/terrible job
e.g:
you’ve done a Good job cleaning the house

5. Do a report
e.g:
i’m doing a report on the history of American
foreign policy

6. Do badly
e.g:
everyone did badly on the test, the highest grade
was 68.

7. Do the ironing
e.g:
I like listening to the radio while I’m doing the
ironing.
8. Do the washing up
e.g:
i usually do the washing up but sometimes my
husband does it.

e.g:
we did our best to win, but the other team
played really well.

10. Do harm
e.g:
the floods didn’t do any serious harm to our
crops.
