Introduction archmello
• From the very beginning of its existence human being have always been involved
in the process of adaptation from the consequences created by its own. Among
such one of the prevailing consequence humans face at present is the space
crunch. As a result of this, we have started building dwelling units stacked next to
& over one another and have adapted the change of habituating on heights.

• The concept of vertical living is no new but the way architecture & design has
shaped it has made vertical living a new luxury wherein people crave to live on
heights. This gives a new vision to architects & designers to visualize the future &
embrace the movement of vertical living.
• But with every new adaptation comes new unimagined challenges as assimilating
more people into a confined piece of land requires thoughtful distribution of all
basic facilities that are required for living.

• Currently housing in India is dominated mostly by low-rise apartments. Bombay,

now known as Mumbai was one of the first city in India to see the emergence of
apartments. Over the years apartments, as a housing typology has developed a
lot with developers offering more in terms of unit options, added amenities,
creating a sense of community & keeping in mind sustainability factors etc.

• But in order to woo the buyers, the real estate developers have compromised the
quality of spaces. There are ten of thousands of housing schemes currently under
construction in India but only a few stand out & the rest are just housing blocks
built with brick, mortar, glass & having a eye-catching facade and the only aim of
such housing schemes is to fit in the spaces to meet the developers requirements.

• The practice of fitting in the spaces under a fixed size module only produces dead
& dull spaces lacking natural light ventilation. The quality of the space is more
important in apartment than the quantity because no matter how big the unit is in
terms of area, but if its not well planned keeping in mind the functions of the
space then it is of no use. Apartment designing is a process from part to whole
wherein right from designing multiple modules to their stacking & the overall
layout are all important in achieving a thoughtful vertical community.

• There is a lot that can be worked out in the “Apartment Architecture” in India.
Repeating towers is a very commercial practice. This housing typology certainly
needs a fresh approach. As designers it is our duty to keep the balance between
providing quality spaces & at the same time keeping up with the developers
requirements.

The Challenge archmello
• The challenge is to design an apartment scheme in India having different unit
types ( 3, 4 & 5BHK ) with any amenities participants would like to incorporate.
The aim of this competition is to explore & innovate new design possibilities for
the future vertical communities in India.

• In India most of the apartment schemes are designed as a series of repetitive

towers housing different units across the floors where the very essence of the
vertical community is neglected. We would like our participants to think out of the
box & create proposals which are innovative & bold and could possibly provide
a new design solution to this housing typology.

• The idea behind the competition is to refine the apartment architecture in India &
develop new feasible concepts. To keep the competition a bit more practical,
participants will have to design under certain parameters to keep the proposals
feasible.

• It is up to the participants to design a single block or multiple blocks as per their

concept. There is no fixed limit on the number of different unit types but the overall
housing scheme should have an equal balance of 3, 4 & 5 BHK units. The area of
different unit types is also kept up to the participants.
