Engineering Mechanics
A. Definition
- Oldest branch of physical science which deals with the state of rest or
motion of bodies under the action of forces.
Branches
1. Statics – deals with bodies in the state of rest.
2. Dynamics or Kinetics – deals with bodies in motion under the action of forces.
3. Kinematics – refers to the study of motion without reference to the forces which
causes the motion.

B. STATICS
FRICTION
• Defined as the limited amount of resistance to sliding between the surfaces of two
bodies in contact.
𝐹𝑓𝑟 = 𝜇𝑁
wherein: F = frictional force (N)
 = coefficient of friction (-)
N = normal force (N)
 = angle of friction
tan ∅ = 𝜇

REACTIONS AT SUPPORTS
• A support reaction can be a force
resulting on a support or a resulting
restraining end moment, which
results due to a prevented
possibility to move. In the case of
structural systems, support
reactions are in equilibrium with the
external forces acting on the
structure.

Shear and Bending Moment Diagrams
• Shear Force Diagrams – graphical
representation of the variation of the
shearing force on a portion or the entire
length of a beam or frame.
• Bending Moment Diagrams - graphical
representation of the variation of the
bending moment on a segment or the
entire length of a beam or frame.

C. DYNAMICS
• Describes how objects move
VECTOR & SCALAR QUANTITIES
1. Vector quantities – quantities whose measurement is specified by magnitude and
direction. Ex. Weight, Momentum, Torque, velocity, displacement, acceleration, etc.
2. Scalar quantities – quantities which have only magnitude. Ex. Speed, Mass, volume,
energy, length, temperature, etc.
IMPORTANT TERMS
1. Displacement – change in position (length and direction, vector)
2. Speed – distance per unit time (scalar)
3. Velocity – displacement per unit time (vector)
4. Acceleration – change of velocity per unit time (vector)
