Design and Numerical Modeling Exercise - 2022
The aim of this exercise is to design forces and displacements for some specified members of a high
rice RC office building subjected to vertical as well as lateral loads. The building is situated in
Colombo seafront. You will be calculating these forces/displacements manually with simplified 2D
models as well as with more realistic 3D models using a finite element package SAP 2000.
❖ The building to be designed is shown Fig. 1. It has N storeys where;
• N = 40 + (last digit of your Reg. number)
1. Design axial force for the specified column, and the shear core, at Levels N-1, N-2, N-5 and 1
due to gravity loads.
2. Design moments for the specified floors beam and the connected columns, due to gravity loads.
3. Shear forces, bending moments, displacements, and story drift of the core and frame using the
approximated analysis, under the given uniform wind load (2 kNm-2) at each floor level (graphs
of each parameter should be created).
4. Concentrated interaction force QH (from approximated analysis) at the top of the specified frame
and the beading moment and shear force in its roof beam and connected columns due to QH using
the cantilever or portal method.
5. Variation of the wind press acting on the building, for wind acting from Y-direction, according
to Wind Code.
6. Along –wind acceleration according to wind code.
7. Total base shear due to an earthquake of magnitude 0.1 g acting in the Y-direction (Using
equivalent static force method).
8. Variation of this base shear over height.

1. Frequencies and mode shapes for the first four modes.
a) Only for self-weight
b) Self-weight + Total dead load + 30% of live load
2. Design axial forces referred to in 1 above at the Level 1 of the building.
3. The values specified in 3 above (displacements, story drift, shear forces and bending moments).
4. Variation of deflection of the specified column and the core, under serviceability condition, with
wind pressure found in 5 above, and the drift index.
5. Conducting modal time history analysis for given earthquake; see Fig. 2 for ground motion data,
obtain time history response (max. displacement, velocity and acceleration at each floor level) of
your building model.
6. Conducting Modal RS analysis for given data (07); obtain the response (displacement and base
shear at each floor level) of your building model.
