Building PI System Assets and
Analytics with PI AF
Objectives
In this class we discuss and build
basic Asset Framework™ (AF)
elements, attributes, and templates.
In the advanced exercises we discuss
combining the various elements
to provide users with powerful
information structures. We also
present a variety of ways to perform
analytical calculations, including
Asset Analytics. Notifications will also
be covered in detail.
Deliverables
The following services are performed:
Pre-service checklist review.
An interactive on-site Building PI System Assets and Analytics with PI AF class.
Provisioning of a preconfigured virtual learning environment hosted in the
Microsoft® Azure cloud for student use during the class (see access requirements in
the Requirements section below).
If Azure cannot be used, deployment of a learning environment using demo PI Tags
and sample AF Databases in your production or test PI System.
Preparation of Course documentation for a maximum of 12 students per class:
• OSIsoft training material will be current to the latest version of our tools. If you
wish to have the class taught using an older version of our software, this must
be specified at the time of ordering so we can prepare the appropriate course
documentation.
Training certificates for each student.
Compilation of training evaluations.
Class Content
During the first day the students will embark on a guided walkthrough of the
Asset Framework where they will use PI System Explorer and PI Builder to build elements,
attributes, templates, and data references while completing comprehensive and challenging
exercises. Furthermore, students will learn how to create an element relative display in
PI ProcessBook™.
On the second day students will construct a variety of calculations using Asset Analytics
and begin exploring Event Frames concepts including template creation, Event Frame
generation and exploring Event Frames in PI DataLink™ and PI Vision™.
Students will also learn about all of the features and functionality of Notifications by
configuring and testing various Notifications. Particular attention is paid to triggers and
delivery channels. Finally, students will learn the power of advanced template design, a
powerful concept to build smarter AF Structures. Advanced topics such as AF Security and
Exporting AF Databases will also be covered.
Note: The instructor can adjust the class content to fit the students’ requirements. This
means they’ll spend more time on subjects that are important to them and less time on
subjects that are less relevant to their situation. However, the trainer will not go beyond the
scope of this training package.

Timeline
OSIsoft requires a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice in order to prepare course documentation,
prepare the Azure virtual machines, and assign an instructor. OSIsoft will ship or deliver
training material on or before the first day of the workshop. A typical timeline from ordering
to completion is:
At least two weeks prior to the training — Communication of prerequisites and on-site
session dates with OSIsoft.
One week prior to the training — Preparation of Azure virtual machines.
Training week — On-site training delivery (4 days).
We suggest having the class from Tuesday to Friday. This will allow the instructor to travel
Monday morning and perform any required setup and testing in advance of the scheduled
training days.
Requirements
The customer is responsible for providing a fully equipped classroom. The minimum
requirements for a classroom are:
Access to training room for the duration of the workshop including preparation or
software setup.
One PC per person including the instructor with minimum technical specifications of a
Pentium® Dual Core Processor, 2GB RAM, 1GB free hard drive space,
Networked TCP/IP, and Windows® 7 or Windows 8.
A flip chart, a white board or a white screen, and a compatible laptop projector.
If using Azure, students must be allowed to connect to the domain *.cloudapp.net
through the port range 60000 to 60050 (the required firewall ports must be open).
If Azure cannot be used then there are a number of on-site software requirements that
must be met. Your instructor will discuss these requirements with you and can also
assist in testing Azure connectivity.
The student body should be comprised of individuals with the following skill set:
Experience launching applications and navigating a Microsoft Windows operating
system and experience working with Microsoft Excel.
