The Different Kinds Of

Parallelogram
Mathematics 9 Quarter 3:Week 2
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• prove theorems on different kinds of

parallelogram
• Rectangle
• Rhombus
• Square
DEFINITION OF TERMS

1. THEOREM is a statement that needs to be proven before being accepted.

2. POSTULATE is a statement accepted to be true without proof.
3. PARALLEL LINES are two straight lines that do not ever meet.

4. PERPENDICULAR LINES are two lines that intersect to form a right angle.
THE SPECIAL PARALLELOGRAMS

A quadrilateral with two

A parallelogram with all pairs of parallel sides.
four sides congruent

A rectangle with all four

sides congruent.
A rhombus with four
right angles. A parallelogram with
four right angles
Lesson 1: Theorem on Rectangle

The diagonals of a
rectangle are congruent.
Given: Rectangle ABCD
Prove: 𝐴𝐶 ≅ 𝐵𝐷

STATEMENTS REASONS
1. ABCD is a rectangle. Given
2. 𝐴𝐷 ≅ 𝐵𝐶 Property of Rectangle
3. 𝐴𝐵 ≅ 𝐵𝐴 Reflexive Property
4.∠𝐷AB and ∠𝐶BA are right angles Definition of Rectangle
5. ∠𝐷AB ≅ ∠𝐶BA All right angles are congruent.
6. Δ DAB ≅ Δ CBA SAS Postulate
7. 𝐴𝐶 ≅ 𝐵𝐷 Corresponding Parts of Congruent
Triangles are Congruent (CPCTC)

The diagonals of a rectangle are congruent.

Lesson 2: Theorem on Rhombus

Theorem 1: The
diagonals of a rhombus
are perpendicular to
each other.
Given : Rhombus WISE with diagonals 𝑊𝑆 and 𝐸𝐼
Prove: 𝑊𝑆 ⊥ 𝐸𝐼

The diagonals of a rhombus are perpendicular to each other.

Lesson 2: Theorem on Rhombus

Theorem 2: Each
diagonal of a rhombus
bisects its opposite
angles.
Given : Rhombus MORE with diagonal 𝐸𝑂
Prove: ∠1 ≅ ∠4 , ∠3 ≅ ∠2

Each diagonal of a rhombus bisects its opposite angles.

Lesson 3: Theorem on
Square
SQUARE

Squares are quadrilaterals with 4

congruent sides and 4 right angles,
and they also have two sets of
parallel sides.
Theorems on Square

The definition of a square can also be stated as:

1. A square is a quadrilateral that is also a rectangle and a rhombus.
2. A square is a rhombus with four right angles.
3. A square is a rhombus with two adjacent sides perpendicular.
4. A square is a rectangle with four congruent sides.

The difference between a square and rhombus is that all angle square are
right angles, but the angles of a rhombus need not be right angles.
CONCEPT CHECK
HOPE is a square and diagonals HP and
OE bisect each other at point E.

1. Can you give the measures of the

numbered angles?
