DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES

CVEN 420
TERM PROJECT
Design of Steel Structure Due: November 18, 2020

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is required to analyze and design ALL structural steel members of a steel structure
warehouse and office building covering the shown area in Figure 1, in conformance with
loads, member types, materials, and other criteria as outlined below. The design must be in
strict conformance with the 15th Edition of the AISC Steel Construction Manual. Unless
otherwise specified, the design of ALL members shall be on the basis of lightest weight.

A. Warehouse
Assume the following service loads:
i. Roof Live Load= 20 psf.
ii. Superimposed Dead Load (NOT incl. member wt.) = 100 psf.
iii. Wind Loads: Assume wind loads as per QCS 2014.

Option 1: Steel Truss System

 Propose a suitable steel truss system to cover this area. Draw to a convenient scale a
complete layout, plan, elevations and sections if needed for this structure, showing
all the necessary structural elements and bracing systems.
 Show all calculations related to load distribution on an intermediate truss and the
truss' internal forces. Clearly state sources of ALL data, i.e., references from AISC
Manual, with your design assumptions.
 Design all truss members. Analysis and design are based on the assumption that all
members are pinned and carry compression or tension load ONLY. Draw a sketch of
a TYP. Truss connection as a bolted and welded connection.
 Steel Bracing shall be double angle steel. Design all steel bracing in both directions.
Draw a sketch of a TYP. connection details of the bracing.
 Clearly show ALL truss members, and dimensions and designations in CAD format.
Also, clearly indicate the axial load (in kips) and indicate Tension or Compression for
ALL members.

Option 2: Rigid Frame System

 Propose an alternative steel framing system to cover this area. Draw to a convenient
scale a complete layout, plan, elevations and sections if needed for this structure,
showing all the necessary structural elements and bracing systems.
 Show all calculations related to load distribution on an intermediate frame. Clearly
state sources of ALL data, i.e., references from AISC Manual, with your design
assumptions.
 Design all rigid frame members for an intermediate frame. Design and sketch a
TYP. connection at section A.

Make a comparison between the two options in terms of steel tonnage only.

B. OFFICE Building
Assume the following service loads:
i. Roof Live Load= 20 psf.
ii. Floor Live Load= 100 psf
iii. Superimposed Dead Load (NOT incl. member wt.) = 120 psf.
iv. Ignore wind loads.

 Assume the office two-story building with floor to floor height = 13 ft.

I. Design of Floor Level as (Composite Members)

a. Floor Beams: Shall be W-section of A992 steel. Beams are simply supported. Assume
beams are continuously laterally-supported. Assume composite beams with 2.5
inches concrete slab on 3 inches composite steel deck. Beams must be spaced
evenly and no less than 5 ft., nor greater than 10 ft. The design MUST satisfy flexure
and deflection limit = L/360 under live loads. Perform analysis of beams using RAM
Steel software and compare the computer analysis results with hand-calculations of
at least 1 beam member.

b. Connections: Use A325 Bolts. Design the shear connection for: i) Interior beam to
Girder, ii) Girder to column connection. Sketch the connection details.

c. Calculate the STEEL TONNAGE of the floor level.

II. Design Roof Level as (Roof steel joists)

a. Roof Steel Joist: The roof shall be supported by steel joists. Roof slab is 1 ½ inches
non-composite steel deck. These joists' spacing shall be evenly between corner
columns, with a minimum spacing = 5 ft. and a maximum spacing = 10 ft. The design
of joists shall be limited to a live load deflection not to exceed L/360. Bridging shall
be “horizontal.” You may use available commercial joists’ catalog.

III. Design of Columns

a. Steel Columns: Shall be W-section of A992 steel. Design all-steel interior and
exterior columns. Compare the computer analysis with hand-calculations of at least
one column.
b. Design the columns’ base plates and the requested size of the concrete footing.
Draw a sketch of a TYP. base plate details.
