Title Project: The Feasibility of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) leaves and Pomelo (Citrus
maxima) peelings extract as Mosquito repellant

A. RATIONALE

Mosquitoes and the diseases they spread have been responsible for killing more people than

all the wars in history. Even today, tens of millions more are killed and debilitated by a host of

other mosquito-borne diseases, including filariasis, yellow fever, malaria, and dengue.

Eucalyptus has a powerful smell that interferes with mosquito delicate senses and make it

difficult for them to locate their food sources. The oil from these trees also repels other insects such

as ticks, midges and sandflies. While the presence of the plant itself will work as a repellent in your

yard, the oil can be applied directly to the skin as well, but should be applied regularly for optimum

protection.

Mosquitos and ants especially detest the smell of orange and lemon peel. These citrus peels

contain organic chemicals that have the ability to repel mosquitos and other insects, citrus fruits are

used in different ways to help in the fight against mosquitos and if they are applied correctly, we

might stand a chance to win some of the fights.

5
B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Leaves

and Pomelo (Citrus maxima) Peelings Extracts as Mosquito repellant.

Specifically, it aimed to answer the following questions:

1. Are Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Leaves and Pomelo (Citrus maxima) Peelings Extract

contain mosquito repellent properties?

2. Is there a significant difference among the treatments of the Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)

leaves extract and Pomelo (Citrus maxima) peelings extract in terms of the number of

mosquitoes repelled per unit time?

3. Is there a significant difference between the Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Leaves and the

Pomelo (Citrus maxima) Peelings Extract and the commercial one in terms of the number of

mosquitoes repelled per unit time and in terms of cost?

C. HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

This was directed by the following hypotheses:

Null Hypotheses

1. The Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Leaves and Pomelo (Citrus maxima) Peelings Extract

does not contain mosquito repellent properties.

6
2. There is no significant difference among the treatments of the Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)

leaves extract and Pomelo (Citrus maxima) peelings extract in terms of the number of

mosquitoes repelled per unit time.

3. There is no significant difference between the Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Leaves and the

Pomelo (Citrus maxima) Peelings Extract and the commercial one in terms of the number of

mosquitoes repelled per unit time and in terms of cost.

D. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study sought to determine the feasibility of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Leaves and

Pomelo (Citrus maxima) Peelings Extract as Mosquito repellant.

Specifically, this study aimed to achieve the following:

1. To determine if the Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Leaves and Pomelo (Citrus maxima)

Peelings Extract contain mosquito repellent properties.

RESEARCH METHOD

A. Collection of Raw Materials and Equipments

The raw material used in this study was Eucalyptus leaves extract and Pomelo peelings extract that

would be gathered by the researchers at Bued, Alaminos City Pangasinan. The gathered materials might

be mature enough to carry all the important chemical properties that can help in making mosquito

repellent and it should be clean before doing the experiment. Water would also be used to be able to

make perfect concentration.

Equipment’s/ Materials

The equipment’s and instrument that was used in conducting this study includes Erlenmeyer

flask which, Mortar and Pestle, Close container, Filter paper, Beaker, Gloves, Lab Gowns and

Mask.

Procedure

1. Gathering of Materials and Laboratory Equipment’s

Three hundred (300) grams of extracted Eucalyptus leaves and Three hundred (300) grams of

extracted Pomelo peelings that was gathered from Bued, Alaminos City Pangasinan. The said

equipment’s was borrowed at the laboratory of Alaminos City National High School (ACNHS).

2. Safety Precautions

During the whole experimentation, some safety clothing was been dressed by the researchers in

order to avoid some hazardous chemical that was in the laboratory. This safety clothing includes

Gloves, Laboratory Gown, Mask.

8
3. Phytochemical Analysis

The Eucalyptus leaves extract and Pomelo peelings extract was brought to Virgen Milagrosa

University Foundation- College of Pharmacy for photochemical testing. It is a method of screening that

could help identify the chemicals that have anti-mosquito property. This could help in identifying

whether the Eucalyptus leaves extract and Pomelo peelings was classified in this.

4. Preparation of Materials

The plant extract was obtained by maceration method. Three hundred (300) grams of extracted

Eucalyptus leaves and extracted Pomelo peelings were collected by the premises of one of the

researchers. The collected plant parts were weighted, cut, blended, and crashed.

5. Preparation of Treatments

Using the beaker, the amount of Papaya leaf extract and Lemongrass oil was measured

separately for each treatment.

6. Pre-Treatment Evaluation

The mosquitoes were observed by the researchers to identify the difference between the

commercial mosquito repellant and the alternative mosquito repellant. This procedure should be applied

before the application of treatments. The mosquitoes were observed inside the laboratory with the help

of medical technologists and health expert. The results of this evaluation were recorded and used to

identify the difference between the commercial and Eucalyptus leaves extract and Pomelo peelings

extract.

9
7. Application of treatment

The different prepared treatments were applied to the observed mosquitoes. To avoid bias in

applying the treatments, the mosquitoes should use same Eucalyptus leaves extract and Pomelo peelings

extract before the application of treatment. This could help he researcher to determine the difference

between commercial mosquito repellent and Eucalyptus leaves extract and Pomelo peelings extract.

8.Post-Treatment Evaluation

After the application of treatment, the difference before and after the Papaya leaf extract and

Lemongrass oil was applied and observed by the researchers. The result of this evaluation was important

in finalizing the difference of this extract and oil from the commercial one.

public enemy number one in fight against global infectious disease. Mosquito- borne diseases cause

millions of deaths worldwide every year with a disproportion are effect on children and the elderly in

developing countries. This study was conducted to (1) Determine if the Eucalyptus Leaves and Pomelo

Peelings Extract contains mosquito repellent properties (2) Determine if there is a significant difference

among the treatments of the Eucalyptus Leaves and Pomelo Peelings Extract in terms of the number of

mosquito repelled per unit time (3) Determine if there is a significant difference between the Eucalyptus

Leaves and the Pomelo Peelings Extract and the commercial one in terms of the number of mosquito

repelled per unit time and in terms of cost.

Three hundred (300) grams of Eucalyptus leaves and Pomelo peelings were acquired from

Alaminos City, Pangasinan. They were extracted and prepared using the following treatments in 3

replicates. T0, negative control (placebo); T1 (75 ml of Eucalyptus leaves extract and 25 ml of

Pomelo peelings extract) T2 (25 ml of Eucalyptus leaves extract and 75 ml of Pomelo peelings

extract) T3 (50 ml of Eucalyptus leaves extract and 50 ml of Pomelo peelings extract) T4

(commercial: Baygon).

The data gathered based from the experiment were correlated with one another to find

significant differences.

11
Results revealed that: (1) Eucalyptus leaves and Pomelo peelings extract contains mosquito repellent

properties. (2) There is a significant difference among the different treatment in terms of the number of

mosquitoes repelled per unit time. (3) There is a significant difference between the Eucalyptus leaves

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study

Almost everyone has had the unpleasant experience of being bitten by a mosquito. Mosquito

bites can cause skin irritation through an allergic reaction to the mosquito’s saliva – this is what causes

the red bump and itching. But a more serious consequence of some mosquito bites may be transmission

of serious diseases and viruses such as Malaria, Dengue virus, Zika and West Nile virus. Mosquitoes

and the diseases they spread have been responsible for killing more people than all the wars in history.

Even today, tens of millions more are killed and debilitated by a host of other mosquito-borne diseases,

including filariasis, yellow fever, malaria, and dengue.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease that has rapidly spread in all regions in the recent

years. Dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti. Dengue is

widespread throughout the tropics, with local variations in risk influenced by rainfall, temperature,

relative humidity and unplanned rapid urbanization.

Dengue viruses are spread to people through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito.

Dengue is common in more than 100 countries around the world. Forty percent of the world’s

population, about 3 billion people, live in areas with a risk of dengue. Dengue is often a leading cause of

illness in areas with risk.

Although less common, some people develop severe dengue, which can be any number of

complications associated with severe bleeding, organ impairment and/or plasma leakage. Severe dengue

has a higher risk of death when not managed appropriately. Severe dengue was first recognized in the

5

1950s during dengue epidemics in the Philippines and Thailand. Today, severe dengue affects most

Asian and Latin American countries and has become a leading cause of hospitalization and death among

children and adults in these regions.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue is now endemic in over 100

countries. As many as 3.6 billion people, or 40% of the world’s population, reside in dengue-endemic

areas. Each year, an estimated 400 million people are infected with dengue virus, 100 million become ill

with dengue, and 21,000 deaths are attributed to dengue. In 2021 itself, as of February 20, 2021, the

Philippines reported 10 260 dengue cases, including 32 deaths. The number of cases is 72% lower

compared to the 37 487 cases that were reported in the same period in 2020.

Eucalyptus has a powerful smell that interferes with mosquito delicate senses and make it

difficult for them to locate their food sources. The oil from these trees also repels other insects such as

ticks, midges and sandflies. While the presence of the plant itself will work as a repellent in your yard,

the oil can be applied directly to the skin as well, but should be applied regularly for optimum

protection.

Mosquitos and ants especially detest the smell of orange and lemon peel. These citrus peels

contain organic chemicals that have the ability to repel mosquitos and other insects, citrus fruits are used

in different ways to help in the fight against mosquitos and if they are applied correctly, we might stand

a chance to win some of the fights.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This portion of the study shows the data gathered, detail of the analysis, and interpretation of the

findings based on the problems that was stated.

In this chapter, it tries to discuss the observation noted on the experiment and the characteristics

of the mosquito repellent made from Eucalyptus leaves and Pomelo peelings extracts. Four treatments

were prepared in order to test the feasibility of Eucalyptus leaves and Pomelo peelings extracts as

mosquito repellent.

To determine if there were significant difference in the number of drove away mosquitoes of the

different treatments; ANOVA was employed. If the F-value is greater than tabular value, then there is a

significant difference. Table 1b shows the F-value of 4.27 is greater than the tabular value of 3.48

indicating significant difference in the pH values of the treatment. This further means that the pH values

differ greatly from each other.
