SECTION 24: GEOTEXTILE

24.1 Geotextile Fascine Mattress

24.1.1 General

A non-woven geotextile with a timber or bamboo fascine mattress shall be

placed over low lying areas underlain with very soft and soft soils wherein
deposition of fill would have resulted in contamination of the fill with the
soft soils or mudwaves or heave of the soft soils ahead of the filling front.

24.1.2 Geotextile Material

The geotextile used shall be a non-woven mechanically bonded (needle--

punched) fabric made from either polypropylene or polyester or
polyethylene filaments or any of these combinations. The geotextile shall
comply with the minimum mechanical and hydraulic properties given in
Table 24-1.

24.1.3 Timber or Bamboo Fascine Mattress

Individual timber or bamboo pieces each of external diameter not less

than 50mm shall be tied together by steel wire to form a stable

rectangular frame with the individual bamboo pieces spaced equally in

both directions at spacings not more than 700mm. All sharp objects, e.g.
large stones, tree stumps, etc. that may damage the geotextile shall be
removed and disposed.

24.1.4 Installation

The non-woven geotextile shall be sewn together to ensure seam

efficiency of not less than 90%. Seams shall be of “flat” or “prayer” type
(Dias, 1985). Polyester threads shall be of dtex 3 x 1100 with break
strength of not less than 19kg. Either ‘101’ Single-Thread Chainstitch
sewn in two rows or ‘401’ Two Thread Chainstitch sewn in one row may
be adopted. In both cases the stitch density shall be not less than 3.5
stitches/inch. The geotextile shall be placed directly over the
timber/bamboo fascine mattress with the seams in a direction
perpendicular to the embankment and shall be laid as smoothly as
possible with no wrinkles or folds.

An initial 500mm thick sand material shall be placed over the geotextile
fascine mattress without the associated use of compaction plant.
Subsequent fill layers using suitable soil fill shall be deposited and
compacted in accordance with the relevant Clauses of the Earthworks
Specifications. The initial fill shall be placed within 7 days of the
placement of geotextile in any one area failing which the geotextile may
be rejected.

Holes, tears or otherwise damaged geotextiles, as determined by the

S.O., shall be repaired immediately at the Contractor's own cost. The
damaged area shall be cleared of all fill material to a suitable distance
from the damaged area to allow placement of a geotextile patch which
shall extend to a minimum distance of 1 metre beyond the perimeter of
the damaged area.
24.1.5 Initial Fill over Geotextile Bamboo Fascine Mattress

S24-2 Revised on 6 Oct. 2011

EDTP GEMAS-JOHOR BAHRU TECH. SPEC. FOR ARCH., C&S AND MEP

The first 500mm fill over the geotextile bamboo fascine mattress shall be
hard, clean, crushed rock, gravel or sand complying with the
requirements of Table 24-2.

Table 24-2

B.S. Sieve Size Percentage by Mass Passing

20mm 100
10mm 0 to 100
5mm 0 to 100
2mm 0 to 100
600m 0 to 50
70m 0 to 5

The fill shall be spread over the geotextile bamboo fascine mattress using
light earthworks plant such as back pushers or swamp dozers and in such
manner as to ensure minimal mudwaves ahead of the filling front. All
equipment for use and the sequence of filling shall be to the agreement of
the S.O.. In the event that the S.O. is of the opinion that mudwaves are
excessive, he may instruct the use of draglines to deposit sand in thin
lifts.

Trucks and other plant conveying sand shall be maintained at a distance

of not less than 30m from the filling front.

24.2 Seperator Geotextile over Final Formation level

24.2.1 General

A separator geotextile shall be placed directly over the final formation

level over the extent shown on the Drawings.

24.2.2 Geotextile Material

Geotextiles shall be a non woven mechanically bonded (needle punched)

fabric from an approved manufacturer and shall be formed from
polypropylene or polyethylene or polyester filaments or any of these
combinations. It shall be sufficiently durable and resistant to naturally
occurring chemical, fungi and bacteria when installed in contact with the
materials to be separated.

It shall not be susceptible to damage or strength loss when exposed to

ultra-violet light during the period when it is uncovered. Notwithstanding
the above requirement the maximum permitted time of exposure to
sunlight shall be 7 days. Geotextile exposed to sunlight for periods longer
than the stated 7 days shall be rejected and the Contractor shall replace
with new geotextile.

The geotextile shall comply with the requirements given in Table 24-1.

Joints in the geotextile shall be laid perpendicular to the longitudinal axis

of the embankment. Overlap sideways shall be not less than 200mm.

Sand shall be deposited over the geotextile with minimal delays.

24.3 Filter Geotextiles

The requirements for filter geotextiles shall be as described in Clause

24.2.

24.4 Labeling, Packing, Storage and Handling of Materials

Geotextile materials delivered to the site shall be furnished with an outer

plastic wrapping suitable for protection against moisture and extended
ultraviolet exposure prior to placement. An opaque tarpaulin shall be
placed over all rolls where the outer wrappings are removed or damaged
such that the geotextile is exposed.

EDTP GEMAS-JOHOR BAHRU TECH. SPEC. FOR ARCH., C&S AND MEP

Each role of geotextile shall be externally labeled or tagged to provide

product identification sufficient for field identification as well as inventory
and quality control purposes. As a minimum, external tagging shall
include:

(a) Name of manufacturer

(b) Product Type and Style
(c) Product Grade
(d) Lot number
(e) Physical Dimensions (length and width)

The product grade, manufacturer's name and lot number shall be printed
directly on the geotextile. The printing shall be part of the manufacturing
process and shall be on a spacing of 2m x 2m.

Rolls shall be stored in a manner which protects them from the elements.
If stored outdoors, they shall be elevated and protected with a waterproof
cover.

24.5 Submission

The Contractor shall submit a Certification of Compliance from the

geotextile manufacturer that the product delivered to the project will have
property values equal to or greater than those specified along with factory
test results of materials certified by the manufacturer showing
conformance with the requirements of these Specifications. Certified
property values shall be equal to the average value less standard
deviations. A sample of 1m2 of geotextile to be used shall be submitted
with the certification letter to the S.O. for his approval and retention.

The S.O. may order the carrying out of tests to check for compliance and
the cost of all testing shall be borne by the Contractor.
