For the facilitator:

Welcome to the English 8 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Using modal
verbs, nouns and adverbs appropriately.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into

Helping verbs are also called Auxiliary verbs or modals. They give the
mood of the sentence as for expression of ability, possibility, permission,
prohibition or obligation.
Study the table below, the modal verbs are classified according to
their function or use.

ON NOUN CLASSIFICATIONS

If a noun is a specific name of person, place, thing or animal such as


Marcelo H. Del Pilar, Bulacan, Sharp Refrigerator, and Philippine Eagle it
shall be written in or with capitalized first letter. It is called Proper Noun.

If the noun is not a specific name such as chairs, dogs, person, etc., it
is called Common Noun.

So instead of writing “My favourite singer is regine velasquez.”


Just write:

“My favorite singer is Regine Velasquez.” –Proper Noun

Instead of writing “I want to go to School and do my Assignment.”


Just provide lower case (letters) of school and assignment.-Common Noun

Meanwhile, other classifications of noun are: a. Collective if the noun


is used to designate group or collection (examples: school, family, jury,
committee); b. Abstract if the noun if determined by quality or idea that can
be perceived by mind rather than the senses. Examples of abstract nouns
are cruelty, kindness, love and hope. c. Mass if the noun is used to give a
way for measuring uncountable things such as rice, sand, milk etc., giving it
words that mark count or measurement—a kilo of rice, sack of sand,
bottles of milk.
*nouns that can be counted are called countable nouns
*nouns that are tangible or can be touched are called concrete nouns

ON KINDS OF ADVERB

In what’s New Direction C, you were able to identify the adverb


according to correctness or wrongness of its use.

Adverbs can be placed in front, middle or back part of the sentence. In


the given examples, can you identify the sentences with adverbs placed in
front, middle and back?

Adverbs are used to describe a verb, an adjective or another adverb in
the sentence. What are the sentences in the Direction C activity that
describes a verb, an adjective or an adverb?
What are the sentences that has syntax errors or incorrect sentence
pattern?

Adverbs modifying verbs, adjectives are commonly placed before or after it.
Example “The dog is running slowly.” “The dog is slowly running.”

Verb adverb
You cannot provide adverb if there is no verb, adjective or adverb
being modified.
Example: incorrect
The girl is quietly.

! You cannot modify a verb if it is a linking verb. Adverb can only modify
content words.
Example: correct
The girl is playing quietly.

Adverbs should answer the questions how?, when?, where?, to what


extent?, or to what degree?

Remember:

a. If the noun is a specific name of person, thing, place or ideas it is


(proper noun, common noun)

b. If the noun is not a specific name of person, thing, place or ideas it


is (proper noun, common noun)
c.If the noun is a one word representing the group of person, thing,
place or ideas it is (abstract, collective, mass).
d. If the noun is a one word of non-tangible things or ideas it is
(abstract, collective, mass).
e. If the noun is a one word of non-countable things, it is (abstract,
collective, mass).

*The auxiliary verbs/modals provide different moods for the sentence. Can
is for (ability, possibility); may for (ability, possibility); should for (advice,
ability) and so on.

*Adverbs can be placed in front, middle or back of the sentence. You should
always see to it that you use their kind appropriately. Such as when is for
(time, place, certainty), probably is for (time, place, certainty), and slowly is
for (manner, place, certainty) etc.
