What is It

Emotive Language (Adjective, Adverb, and Verbs)

Do you know that using the right description can make you effective
in influencing other people? This is because of the emotive language.
What is Emotive language? Emotive language refers to the range of
words that are used to evoke emotion to others. This can be persuasive
because it encourages the reader to respond on an emotional level, rather
than considering the facts, or it may subtly affect the way the reader views
the topic.
The choice of word has a great effect on how information is deciphered.
These words can be used to trigger different reactions in your audience.
Using emotive language, you can prove to other people your argument. Look

4
at Jose Rizal’s famous quote “"He who does not truly love his own language
is worse than an animal and smelly fish.", that many us know. Using
adjective (worse than and smelly), adverb (truly), and verb (love) cause an
emotional reaction to the people that make them persuade.

Before going to the main lesson, let us refresh your knowledge about the
following:
1) Verb - a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence. Verb
can be regular or irregular. First, let us define regular verb. Regular
Verbs are defined as having both their past simple tense and past
participle forms constructed by adding the suffixes “-d” or “-ed” to the
end of the word. Irregular Verbs do not follow the simple system of
adding “d” or “ed” to the end of the word to form the past simple and
the past participle of the verb. Look at the table below to see examples
of regular and irregular verbs.

Regular Verbs Irregular Verbs

Appreciate Bleed
Beg Grind
Confess Quit
Encourage Shine
Scare Strike

2) Adverb - a word or phrase that modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb,

or another adverb. It tells us how, where, when, how much and how
often an action happens. Its basic types are the adverbs of Manner,
Time, Place, Frequency, and Degree. To understand adverbs in its
simplest way, read and analyze the table on the next page.

TIME PLACE MANNER FREQUENCY DEGREE

HOW OFTEN? HOW MUCH?
WHEN? WHERE? HOW? (subject + WHAT EXTENT?
adverb + verb)
Today Outside Easily Never Very
Yesterday There Strongly Rarely Fully
All day Above Carefully Usually Absolutely
Last week Indoor Quietly Always Almost
Already anywhere Beautifully Seldom Quite

3) Adjective - a word that describes a noun or pronoun. Let us focus on

descriptive adjective. A descriptive adjective is a word which describes
nouns and pronouns. Most of the adjectives belong in this type. These
adjectives provide information and attribute to the nouns/pronouns
they modify or describe. To understand more look at the example table
below.

5
Descriptive Adjectives
Interesting Amazing Nice Great
Engaging Fabulous Courteous Magnificent
Amusing Extraordinary Admirable Excellent
Diverting Astonishing Charming Skilled
Captivating Brilliant Amiable Exceptional
Compelling Awesome Congenial Incredible
Absorbing Breathtaking Considerate Superb

This time you will use verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in a very creative
and useful manner: to convey emotional response. You will see below the
non-emotive and emotive language. Study the differences.

Non-Emotive
1. Pacquiao defeats Thurman.
Emotive
2. With his unparallel speed and precision, Pacquiao knockouts
Thurman in canvass out of cold.

 Using the underlined words, the impact of the sentence changes. By

adding the adjectives – “with his unparallel speed and precision” and “in
canvass out of cold”; and changing the verb “defeats” from “knockouts”,
the sentence becomes persuasive because of its emotional content.
Non-Emotive
Robert Jaworksi shoots a jumper with one second left in the game.

Emotive
Clutch! Robert Jaworksi knocks down a crucial dagger with one second
left in the game.
 Using the underlined words, the sentence improves its emotional impact.
By adding the verb – “clutch”; and changing the verb phrase “shoots a
jumper” from “knocks down a crucial dagger”, the sentence becomes
persuasive and exciting like listening to a real NBA game.

To foster your vocabulary about the emotive language, look the table below.

Positive Emotion Negative Emotion Other Emotion

Appreciative angry Accepting
blissful disenchanted Calm
contented distressed Confident
ecstatic glum Cool
elated gloomy Earnest
Glad grumpy Easy
Happy grouchy Evenhanded
Joyful miserable Indifferent
Jubilant mad Neutral
merry moody Nonpartisan
respectful nervous Passive
sweet sad Reserved
serene sadistic Satisfied
upbeat selfish Surprised
vivacious sour Tranquil
respectful nervous Passive

6
Use the words in the table to improve your vocabulary specially in
speaking and writing in the context of positive, negative, and neutral
emotions.

There are different emotions such as helpless/confused, anger,

safe/satisfied, happy, inspired, and relaxed/peaceful. What are the other
emotive words to express those emotions? Look at these tables.

Helpless/Confused Anger Safe/Satisfied

uncertain ordeal Confident
indecisive wicked Convenient
Tense aggravate Guaranteed
stressed disgusted Assured
anxious dreadful Fulfilled
alarmed enraged Secure
panicked frustrated Stable
terrified violent Ecstatic
incapacitated sadistic Delighted
trapped repulsive Approving

Happy/Alive Inspired Relaxed/Peaceful

Blissful motivated Beaming
Joyous eager Trusting
Delighted keen Supported
Overjoyed fulfilled Natural
Elated genuine Steady
Jubilant sincere Unhurried
Bright uplifted open-minded
Blessed hopeful Efficient
Vigorous upbeat Calm
Tickled assured at ease

Since you are equipped with emotive words such as verbs, adjectives,
and adverbs that make other persuade. You can easily persuade if you apply
the emotive words in your sentences.

Look at these examples:

Less appealing: “Buy our products!”
More appealing: “Purchase our finest and good quality products!
Less appealing: “This food is nice.”
More appealing: “Taste our breath-taking and delightful food.”

7
Less appealing: “Andres Bonifacio was killed in mountains of
Marogondon.”
More appealing: “The great Andres Bonification was executed in
mountains of Marogondon.”

Less appealing: “You did your task!”

More appealing: “You accomplished your mission in a very convincing
way.”

Less appealing: “The government will reduce interest rates.”

More appealing: “The government will slash interest rates.”
Less appealing: “Another person in the bar was injured by the man's
glass.”
More appealing: “An innocent bystander suffered facial injuries when
the thug launched his glass across the bar.”

See! You can make your sentences appealing by using emotive

adjectives, adverbs, and verbs.
