ANIMAL TYPES
WITH HOOVES

INTRODUCTION
Animals are living organisms that feed on organic matter. Some of them have hooves and some don’t
have hooves. Hooves are tips of a toe of an ungulate that is strengthened by thick and horny keratin
covering. The hoof is an extremely important structure in an animal’s body. If animal has hoof problem,
chances are that optimal animal production and performance will be reduced depending upon the
severity of problem.

BACKGROUND
As a research student at the University of Zimbabwe, I have decided to write a detailed report on
animals with hooves because people really don’t know animals with hooves and are not well acquainted
about the functions of hooves in animals and benefits

TYPES OF ANIMAL
Animals in the family Bovid e.g. antelopes, sheep, goats, cattle, buffalo and bison, horse, donkey, zebra

Animals in the mammalian order Artiodactyl e.g. pigs, hippopotamus, camels, deer, giraffes, cattle

Cattle It is an artiodactyl
Stocky with long rectangular boxes. It needs
hooves for stability when walking and running
Hippopotamus It is an artiodactyl
Strong swimmer but cannot breathe under water,
herbivore, mostly active at night and has a very
sensitive skin
Deer Artiodactyl
It has 2 hooves on each foot, short tails, coat color
varies from brown to red to grey and white.
Zebra Perrissodactyl
It has mixed colors of stripped black and white. It
is a grazer. It’s an example of an equine
Horse Perrissodactyl
It has overall-shaped hooves, short hair, muscular
and deep torso. Its need the hooves because of its
foraging habit that makes it travel longer.

SUMMARY
The hoof is a complex structure that plays a key role in many aspects of animal’s overall health and
productivity. Healthy hooves lead to heavy animals, which raise productivity and income. When hooves
are kept in good conditions, it reduces the loses that stem from treating lame animals and the
production losses that result from their discomfort. A lame animal is not only in pain, but it is an extra
expense that most producers cannot afford. By maintain a sound hoof management routine, animal
owners can reduce their economics losses and increase their chances for profit in future.

Animals with hooves include cattle, pigs, zebras etc.

CONCLUSION
Hooves are important parts of animals. In my research these are some of the animals that have hooves
