2. SOFTWARE TRAINING

2.1 AUTO TRACK

AutoTrack is a vehicle swept path analysis software program used for analysing the
movements of steered and wheeled vehicles including cars, trucks, trams, aircraft and other
more specialist vehicles such as forklift trucks, wheelchairs and access platforms. Vehicle
Tracking provides a set of transportation design tools that include vehicle swept path prediction
for steered vehicles, light rail vehicles, and aircraft, as well as parking layout design and
roundabout design Swept path analysis is the method used to analyze and predict the movement
of steered and light rail vehicles and aircraft.
Auto Track is a vehicle tracking software, mostly used for analyzing the movement of
steered and wheeled vehicles, for in junction improvement drawings and to check the turning
radius, parking design and circular design. The design vehicle is selected by using the” vehicle
library explorer”. One can also design the vehicle according to IRC and add it to the vehicle
library. The dimensions and details of the chosen design vehicle can be viewed by using “insert
profile” from the menu bar. Animation can be done by selecting the paths and vehicles and
using “animate” from menu bar. During animation the start delay timing of each vehicle can
be edited. Also, the view can be changed to 3D, 30 ͦ, 90 ͦ etc. The recording of the animation
can be done for further use.

2.2 PATHFINDER

Pathfinder is an agent-based egress and human movement simulator. It provides a graphical

user interface for simulation design and execution as well as 2D and 3D visualization tools for
results analysis. Pathfinder takes evacuation simulation to the next level of productivity.
Quickly import CAD and PyroSim models and create high-quality animations from the results.
Pathfinder includes a graphical user interface that is used primarily to create and run simulation
models. Pathfinder provides support for the import of Autodesk formats DXF and DWG,
building SMART's IFC format for BIM, as well as DWG, FBX, DAE, and OBJ. Pathfinder's
floor extraction tool makes it possible to quickly use the imported geometry to define the

7
occupant walking space for the evacuation model. Import Type specifications allow automatic
model generation to apply correct object types.

2.3 THE CUBE

The CUBE software suite is a comprehensive set of modules that support transportation
modeling and planning. With CUBE, one can generate decision-making information quickly
using powerful modeling and GIS techniques, statistics and comparisons, high-quality
graphical output, and a variety of reporting methods.
CUBE Voyager uses a modular, script-based structure. This structure allows to
incorporate any modeling methodology in the forecast, such as standard four-step models,
discrete-choice models, and activity-based models. With CUBE Voyager’s open and user-
friendly framework, user can model a wide variety of planning policies and improvements at
the urban, regional, or long-distance levels. One can create a comprehensive library of planning
functions under the general CUBE framework and use that library to model various policies
and improvements. With a well-defined library, user can easily manage data and code complex
methodologies with a simple step-by-step approach. Advanced methodologies allow user to
model junction-based capacity restraints for highway analysis, and discrete-choice path
building for multi-route transit assignment. With CUBE Voyager’s highly flexible network and
matrix calculators, user can calculate travel demand and compare scenarios in detail.

4. HOUSEHOLD INTERVIEW SURVEY

Household Interview Survey (HIS) is one of the most important surveys for any
comprehensive transportation study. Representative samples of dwelling units are selected, and
personal interviews are conducted to obtain socio‐economic and travel characteristics of the
members of the household for one full normal working day. Vast amount of information is
collected on various aspects like family structure, socio‐ economic characteristics, location of
work/study places, and information of travel attributes for all trips made on that day. This data
is employed for analysing the existing travel patterns and related parameters, to help in the
calibration of Travel Demand Models (TDM) that shall be employed in assessing the future
travel demand and evolving future transport systems. Thus, home interview surveys or
household interview surveys are considered pivotal.
The Household Interview Survey conducted in Rajkot, Gujarat, as part of feasibility study
for metro, was analysed. From the analysis, the socio-demographic features and the travel
patterns of the people were identified.

16
5. SITE VISIT

Site visits on the stretch of Mumbai Metro-Line 5 under construction, connecting Thane-
Bhiwandi-Kalyan were conducted as part of the internship program.

6. CLASSIFIED VEHICLE COUNT FROM VIDEO DATA
Collection of video data and extraction of vehicle count from it is a commonly used method
for analysing the properties of a vehicle stream, such as traffic composition, speed, headway,
density etc. Here, the data was collected at various toll booths in the routes – Ahmedabad-Mehsana,
Nandigama-Ibrahimpatnam, Nellore-Tada and Halol-Vadodara. The videos at different times of
the day were analysed to extract the classified vehicle count in the following categories:
• Car/Jeep/Van/Taxi
• Tata Magic
• Minibus
• Standard bus (2-Axle)
• Standard bus (3-Axle)
• Mini LCV
• LCV (4 wheels)
• LCV (6 wheels)
• 2-Axle truck
• 3-Axle truck
• MAV (4-6 Axle)
• Oversized Vehicle (>6 Axles)
The number of vehicles from each category, is counted over peak times and off-peak hours
also. The ADT is obtained from it and is used for the evaluation and fixing of toll fare in the toll
plaza.

7. INTEGRATED MULTI- MODAL TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

With escalating nuisance of transportation demand and rapid urbanisation in India,

innovative solutions and methods are being evolved and borrowed from other countries. Over the
last decade numerous Mass Rapid Transit Systems have come up in various cities like Metro Rails,
Bus Rapid Transit Systems and Monorails. The interlinking of these various public transport
modes and various other modes is now the important issue from user point of view and opportunity
from planners’ point of view, for seamless travel across the various modes and sustainability of
the overall public transportation network in the city.
Multi Modal Transportation System explores the coordinated use of two or more modes of
transport for speedy, safe, pleasant, and comfortable movement of passengers in urban areas. It
provides convenient and economical connection of various modes to make complete journey from
origin to destination. Generally, MMTS has been characterized by increased capacity, efficient
access and better location of both integration and nodes. Public transport is an important
constituent of multi–modal transportation system and hence local and regional public
transportation system must be as integral part of the same.
Integrated Multi- Modal Transport System (IMMTS) comprises of one trip that involves two
or more than two different modes of transportation like bus, metro, car, tram, etc.; either
government or privately operated, where in-between passengers have to transfer into other mode.
Some modes of transportation have always been depended on other modes. Urban bus systems
generally serve train and subway stations and often extends to local airports. A major goal of
integrated multi-modal transport system in developed countries is to reduce dependence on the
automobile as a major mode of ground transportation and increase use of public transport. In the
developing countries a variety of modes of transport are used.
