Statement of the Problem

The research study generally aims to evaluate the potential of cornstarch and talahib

(Saccharum spontaneum) as components of bioplastic. It specifically aims to seek the

answers to the following questions:

1. Is there a significant difference between the bioplastic’s properties compared to the

existing plastic materials in terms of?

a. Maximum weight capacity

b. Tensile Strength

2. Is there a significant change in biodegradability of Bioplastic made from talahib and

cornstarch when measured in?

a. Water Solubility

b. Ph acidity

Statement of Hypothesis

1. a.1. H0: There is no significant difference between the bioplastic’s properties compared

to the existing plastic materials in terms of Maximum weight capacity.

a.2. H1: There is a significant difference between the bioplastic’s properties compared to

the existing plastic materials in terms of Maximum weight capacity.

Significance of the Study

The fulfilment of this research endeavor would be vital to the following sectors of the

community:

Environment. This study can aid in reducing the pollution that plastics had produced

while paving the road for a more enduringly clean world. Fossil fuel consumption and

greenhouse gas emissions are decreased.

Industry. This study will directly benefit the industry by promoting its sustainability and

enabling feedstock diversification for manufacturers.

Vendors and consumers. The findings of this study would have a significant impact on

this industry's consumption because, of all the industries, it contributes the most to plastic

pollution.

Future Researchers. Further studies on the present trend of bioplastics synthesis can

use the produced bioplastics from this work as a starting point.

Scope and Delimitations

This study will be focusing on assessing the effectiveness and potential of talahib

(Saccharum spontaneum) and cornstarch as an ingredient for bioplastic. Saccharum

spontaneum will be collected in Cansuje, Argao, Cebu and only the leaves of mature grass are

to be utilized. This study aims to reduce portion of plastic pollution by producing a bioplastic

from starch extracted from talahib and cornstarch. Researchers will test the maximum weight

capacity, tensile strength, water solubility and pH acidity of the bioplastic. This study is limited

only to the extraction of starch from talahib and cornstarch, molding it to become a bioplastic

and testing the potential of the bioplastic. This research will not further investigate bioplastic

products that can be produced from this. To successfully conduct every procedure that are

needed to accomplish the experimentation period will take approximately 1 month.
