Exercise Booklet
Print this exercise booklet before studying the lesson on-line. It will enable you to write your answers to the HVAC
learning exercises. You will thus be able to switch between reading or listening to the file on-line and writing in the
booklet.

SELECTING AIR CONDITIONERS – PART 1

English lesson

For each exercise, you will write your answer, then you will study its correction on-line before going to the next
exercise.
If you cannot do an exercise, you will be able to study its correction directly, but force yourself to write your
answer as often as possible.

Note that between 2 exercises, you will find it necessary to study the course. As a warning, in the booklet, you will
sometimes find the following indication:
- “ Study the course on-line before doing the next exercise” or
- “ Study the course on-line before going to the next paragraph”

Only study the paragraphs or the exercises which have an equal or a lower level than the one your training
requires.
NVQ Level = Vocational Certificate
A Level = High school Diploma
HND Level = Associate’s Degree
MSC Level = Engineering Schools

Then, when you have completed a file, you will be able to assess your level on-line through a Multiple Choice
Questionnaire in which you will only answer the questions related to the themes you have studied.
So now off you go and work well!
Good luck!
The Authors.

1
N°1 – Cooling power of air conditioners – Part 1 – HND level
Study the course on-line before treating the exercise.

Question 1
What usual principle is applied to dehumidify the air?

Study the course on-line before treating the next exercise.

Question 2
What will happen in a poorly ventilated room subject to significant humidity input (occupants, kitchen, etc.) if the
air cooled on the conditioner evaporator is not accompanied by condensation?

Question 3
What is the (total) cooling power of the AERMEC air conditioner as per the documentation extract above?
In what form does the manufacturer indicate the latent power of its air conditioner?

Study the course on-line before treating the next exercise.

2
Question 4
As a general rule, what is the nominal power of a device and of an air conditioner in particular?

N°2 – Cooling power of air conditioners – Part 2 – HND level

Study the course on-line before treating the exercise.

Question 1
From the documentation extract above, the nominal cooling power readings for the Aermec air conditioner
EWI/CWI are for which types of interior and exterior operating conditions (temperature and humidity, speed of
the fan)?

3
Note that the manufacturer also indicates a range of power absorbed by the compressor according to the limits of
speed variation.

Question 2
From the documentation extract above, complete the table of nominal specifications referring to an Aermec
single-split air conditioner:

ANSWER

Question 3
From the documentation extract above, complete the table:

4
N°3 – Noise levels – HND level
Study the course on-line before treating the exercise.

Question 1
From the documentation extract above, what are the noise levels indicated by the manufacturer of the Aermec
air conditioner below, for the interior and for the exterior units?
Under what conditions are these specifications measured?

Study the course on-line before treating the next paragraphe.

5
N°4 – Installation – HND level
Study the course on-line.

N°5 – Selecting air conditioners – HND level

Study the course on-line before treating the exercise.
Question 1
The following values have been calculated for a room:
Sensible load = 2,000 [W]
Humidity load (or latent load) = 0.5 [kg/h]
What is the total load in [W] ?

Study the course on-line before treating the next exercise.

Question 2
Based on the extract of documentation above, select a single Split Aermec air conditioner for premises with total
loads of 2,900 [W].

6
Question 3
Select a single Split Aermec air conditioner for premises where the following load values are indicated:
Sensible: 2,370 [W].
Latent: 380 [g/h].
Knowing that the shop has the following dimensions, 5 x 7 x 2,8 [m], calculate the air circulation rate of the
selected air conditioner at medium and high fan speeds.
