Billboard charts, 1. __________________ in 1983. It turns 2. __________________ they were completely wrong.
A new study has found that the 80s metalheads were significantly happier in their youth, and better adjusted
when compared to their peers and current college students.

The research – published in the journal Self and Identity – found that while metal enthusiasts (or metalheads)
did experience risky ‘sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll’ lives, the metalhead identity also served as a protective
factor 3. __________________ negative outcomes. The study looked at 377 adults: 154 who had been metal
fans, musicians or groupies in the eighties, 80 who listened to different music at the time, and 153 California
college students.

It turned out that the metalheads reported higher levels of youthful happiness than the other groups and they
were also less 4. __________________ to have any regrets about things they had done in their youth. The key
to the metal fans progressing to happy adulthood, the paper suggests, is their sense of community. “Social
support is a crucial protective factor for troubled youth,” the researchers wrote. Fans and musicians created a
strong sense of community that allowed 5. __________________ to experience strong emotions with people who

3. Read this article about hoarding. Six sentences have been removed from it. For questions 15 to 20,
choose from the sentences (A – G) the one which best fits each gap. There is one extra sentence
you do not need to use.
(Total: 3 points, 0,5 point each correct answer)

INSIDE THE LIFE OF A HOARDER: TRAUMA, LONELINESS

AND THE SECRET POWER OF THINGS
Hoarding looks weird and is often cruelly parodied on television, where such shows suggest that the solution
to a compulsive desire to keep stuff is simply to heroically throw it all out. 15. _____ It’s a bit like trying to help
someone with depression by asking them to simply smile and get better.
Hoarding isn’t just about keeping things. Consider the way humans acquire things. 16. _____ Consumerism is
part of our culture; you are what is in your wardrobe. All of this is fine if you can discard stuff at around the
same rate as you acquire. But what if you don’t – or can’t – discard anything? Not even when it starts affecting
your life in some way, such as inhibiting free movement around your home? Something has clearly gone wrong.
But what?
Some of this is down to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), which is driven by a desire to avoid causing
harm to others. Those with OCD who hoard often report having worries that their rubbish will contaminate or
otherwise harm others. 17. _____
The experience of having nothing, or losing everything, seems to be a possible trigger that causes the problem.
One good example of such loss can be found in refugees, who can suddenly go from a comfortable life to
having nothing but their clothes. Less obvious examples include some hoarders who vividly recall coming home
from school to find all their toys had been sold or thrown away – an experience that clearly affected them deeply.
18. _____ For these people, holding on to possessions can provide insurance against future deprivation or
losses.
Most people reading this article will have special precious possessions: your father’s watch, your mother’s
pearls, your children’s first shoes. 19. _____ You wouldn’t throw anything away, of course.
20. _____ With this we intend to establish better help for someone who has become overwhelmed by their
possessions – and to help that person find a way out of a situation in which they can quite literally be trapped
by what they own.
Adapted from theguardian.com

A Others have experienced a parent becoming unemployed, which caused them to lose their family
home.
B What we know is that different motivations to hoard need different approaches, and that any
attempt to help must begin with understanding and care.
C But for those of us studying and working with people who hoard, it’s clear that for most of them this
isn’t enough – not even close.
D What if everything that came into your possession had similar meaning?
E After all, hoarding is quite simply having so much stuff that you can’t use your living space for, well,
living.
F Another common cause of concern is that throwing away a possession connected to somebody will
cause something bad to happen to that person.
G Not only is accumulating more “stuff” than you need very common, but acquisition has come to be
associated with high status, is much praised, and can be very diverting.
